DAOIST TALES AND ANECDOTES

The fundamental text of Daoism is the Tao Te King of Lao Tzu. It is extremely concise and the best way to try to understand the subject is by reading the tales and anecdotes of Lieh Tzu and Chuang Tzu. Many of these tales were intended to clarify some of the more difficult points of the subject. Daoism cannot be defined and it is easier to say what it is not than what it is. It is not a system of any kind, neither is it comparable with any of the religions of the west. Leon Wieger's translations owe their clarity to his making use of the traditional Chinese commentaries. In the 20th century the great orientalist Ananda Coomarswamy included Wieger among a "handful" of western scholars that has a real understanding of the subject; they were all French or German and he did not rate any of the English translations.
