The Lost Stagecoach: Loner with a Badge # 3 (Loner with a Badge Western Series)

The Lost Stagecoach: Loner with a Badge # 3 (Loner with a Badge Western Series)

Jeff Breland
0/5 ( ratings)
After taking over the stagecoach robbers’ hideout amidst bullets and gun smoke, Special Deputy US Marshal, investigator, and bounty hunter, Jake Stone and his fellow deputies now have five prisoners, including a woman. These outlaws along with the three he was forced to deal a little gunfighter’s justice a few days before and another four the lawmen killed this morning, should wrap up this thing. All they have to do now is escort the prisoners to the nearest jail, however far that may be. Something about the best laid plans of men and mice soon come into play. The first thing on the agenda is to find a telegraph office. Like so many places in the old west, the next town may or may not have such. Coming into a little mining town full of not only miners, but gunfighters and low-life of all sort, surprisingly, they find a telegraph office. Stone informs the stage owner his troubles have been resolved. That is not the case. Unbeknownst to Stone, things have taken a nasty turn. In his reply, the owner tells Stone another stage has been robbed and another is missing. Stone will have to leave the prisoners with the other deputies and turn back. This time, he intends to deal a little more frontier justice and there might not be any prisoners.

Excerpt from this book:
Hearing a rustling behind him, suspecting the peccaries were again wandering in his direction, he saw Hank returning. There wasn't a clue as to what the old man intended to do. Once again he walked by Stone without acknowledging his presence and never missing a step. What would he would tell the gunman? This might be where the s… flies.
“The marshal’s dead,” Hank shouted to the gunman after walking about twenty feet beyond Stone. “Your friend is hurt. I couldn’t help him with my hands tied.”
Astonished as all get out, Stone diverted his eyes back to the stage. The gunman remained behind his human shields as if trying to digest this information. Finally, he released Susan's dress and moved cautiously around her. He moved warily, holding his pistol as if expecting to be fired upon any moment. Moving towards Hank and not drawing fire, he seemed to feel more secure. He moved a little faster as he advanced.
Before the gunman approached, Hank turned to walk back up the incline as though to lead the hostage taker to his partner. Again, he passed Stone without missing a step. This not only led the varmint onward, but placed Hank out of the crossfire.
As things went, there wasn’t a crossfire. Stone waited until the man was within about thirty-feet. Drawing a bead between his eyes, he blew out the back of his head, leaving him with no further inclination to proceed. Before the outlaw could fall to lie where he was shot, the women screamed and Hank dived for cover.
For all practical purposes it was over. But Stone wasn't one to risk his life on a postulation. Standing in a crouching position, he took several shells from his pocket and replaced his spent ammunition.
A chill went up his spine as he realized he had just fired the last round in the magazine.
