Mesmerizing I picked up this book this morning and read it in one sitting. This is what I call the set up. This book introduces Idina. 1. Who she is. 2. What she wanted. 3. Why she wanted. 4. When things changed. 5. Where she ended up. I truly appreciated reading about her time in boot camp. Some books just say, in she went and now she's out, and on to adventures. This book definitely is not that. I read her actions and reactions and know that it will make her adventures that much more interesti...
Wow, definitely got caught up in this oneI was intrigued and waiting for things to progress with Idina and to start understanding the family secret. As such, I could not put the book down. However, there was a lot of army life detail and it was not until the end when things really started to show more depth to those secrets. I was hoping for more of that in all of the day to day of being a cadet, so am a little disappointed with where it ended. Unless Idina is going to spend a lot more time with...
Accurate description of Basic...but...The branch of service appeared to be incorrect. As far as I know, speaking with friends who've experienced the recruit induction and training described in this book...the Basic Training being described is what U.S. MARINES go through, up to and including "The Crucible" although it wasn't referred to that by name.Army Basic and Advanced Training is not as rigorous, unlike Marines who are all rifle soldiers first and MOS unit members second. I say this having
DNF - Mild spoilers only because it takes 40% of the book to get to a decision that could have been wrapped up in the first few chapters. So its a spoiler in that you have to read a good portion of the book to find out, but also it's a major premise of this series, so maybe not a spoiler? This book starts slow with that lead character struggling to meet her family's expectations. These expectations aren't really explained or elaborated on except she doesn't like finance enough. So despite a tedi...
Absolutely intriguing At first I thought, well here were go with another family secret book, one that gets thre protagonist into trouble and everything goes to pot for them before they find out what iit's happening. This was way more intriguing than just that. Thre writing gives little insight as to what will happen next or if it's a fluke of genetics causing psychic episodes or psychological effects but into something wholly different, can't wait to see where this goes!
Excellent start to a new seriesOkay, if you like police procedurals, then imagine a military procedural that takes you through basic. For my money, the lead up to basic was too long and the story stopped just when the good stuff was about to begin. If you're a fan of RAH's Starship Troopers then you will probably enjoy this, but imagine if ST had ended just when they finished basic. For all the little faults in my desired path for this, it held my attention until late into the night and I finishe...
Let's see.Idina, 17, budding artist. She also sees green lights which prove useful to her.Lives with relatives who really don't like her. She's expected to go into finance like them. She doesn't want to. Things get worse and she ends up in the Army. The family really treats her badly. Emotional and mental abuse for sure. Medical abuse possible. Her Army experience is very interesting although the green lights are forgotten for a while. End result: a rather good book with a possible strange villain l...
Wonderful startLoved this story. What an interesting family to be a part of I think I would want to be free of them also. But the military may be kind of extreme. But it seems like it is the right choice hr her. She seems to be a natural born leader and a people person. Looking forward to the next book.
New series, I likeThe opening action was a bit long. But knowing the authors, I can see where that much back story was needed. I went through basic just shy of 50 years ago. The differences between then and now are legion. Mine was the later VietNam era. My largest memory was being scared of my DI more than once. At the end of Basic after passing the PT test, the entire company went thru “Pro Park” and the multiple stations testing our knowledge of equipment and standards. I was one of 8 which p...
