This was an interesting story.I wish I could have given it more of my attention than I was able to. But the focus I was able to give it, I really enjoyed it.I liked the concept of other worlds intruding on our world. The concept of life going on even while major happenings are happening is very poignant for the time in which I'm reading it (Pandemic 2020), because yes, though we are in social distancing, and I haven't left the house more than a handful of times in the last 3 months... life does g...
I'm still confused about the sci-fi parts but the linguistics aspects gave an "Arrival" vibe and I liked the commentary on race and homosexuality.
Very creative, but too complex to work as a short story - this could work better if expanded and fleshed out as a full novel. The main characters are likable, and the problem of worlds “intruding” on another has a lot of potential. I just want something clearer and more fully realized.
Story set in a world where other worlds keep intruding, and need to be locked in place to keep them from overtaking everything. The MC is looking for solutions that keep the worlds from expanding. She works with a linguist who tries to communicate with any intelligent beings who may be dragged between worlds. There's a sort of meet-cute in the middle. It is not fully resolved by the end, but the suggestion is that it's going to go somewhere. The primary lesson seems to be about flexibility accomp...
A quite imaginative story, the characters are great!
Another interesting story from Levar Burton's podcast, and another that I probably wouldn't have ever come across if not for Levar. The story itself was "ok". What stood out most to me in this story was the imagery. Even though I was listening to the story being narrated, it turned into mostly a visual experience. I stopped hearing Levar's words altogether and don't even remember much of whatever I saw on my morning walk as I was listening. I was aware of my surroundings; I didn't zone out or an...
A vivid short story following a doctoral student trying to prevent other worlds from merging into ours. Her partner, Bridger, works as her "translator" which is an occupation that has gained a number of physical and violent tasks in the future. Bridger is the most interesting character in the story. Descriptions of sealing off other worlds gave me a terraform/climate change vibe, and the story also deals with LGBTQ issues in a repressive future society. There is so much here begging for a longer...
