Ghalib was a prolific letter writer. His style was fresh and direct. No more long and torturous salutations, and no more ornamental and bombastic wordiness to impress the recipient or obfuscate the subject. His letters were simple and often written with humor. He said, “I try to write in such a vein that invokes joy in whoever reads it.” He wrote informally as if it was a conversation. He said he “loves to talk with the tongue of the pen and experience the joy of meeting even when separated.” Ghalib claimed that he had turned ‘murasla’ into ‘mukalma’ . He changed the way Urdu prose was written forever. Ghalib’s letters are recognized as a model of prose in Urdu. It is said that if you want to learn how to write good prose in Urdu, devote your nights to the study of Ghalib’s letters.
Originally the letters were published in two volumes:‘O’od-i-Hindi’ appeared a few months before, and ‘Urdu-i-Mu’alla’ a few weeks after Ghalib’s death. Even so, discovery of unpublished letters continued long after his death.
Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan Ghalib, an accomplished Persian and Udru poet, was born in Kala Mahal in Agra, the city of Taj Mahal, in 1797. He died at the age of 73 in 1869.
