Mir Muhammad Taqi Mir is one of the early poets who chose to write his poems in Urdu. At the time, Urdu was new and open with a universe of words from Sanskrit, Bhasha, and Persian. A perfect language for Mir to choose, mold, and infuse with his genius. No wonder, Mir is remembered as Khuda-e Sukhan.
Mir was born in Agra where he lived until his father died. He wrote his ghazals in the Delhi tradition and lived in Kucha Chelan, a neighborhood in the old 18th century Delhi. The wars and the need for gainful patronage then took him to Lucknow where he lived to the end of his days. Mir was a prolific writer, both in Persian and Urdu. He wrote in various poetic forms and in prose, but he outshines in Ghazal, an Urdu form that by tradition is particularly well-suited to express despair, disunion, and desolation. He wrote six Urdu Dewans containing over thirteen thousand couplets. Zikr-i-Mir, an autobiographical exercise, reveals the kind of person Mir was beyond the persona we know from his poetry and makes him whole. Those who think of him just the “poet of sorrow,” shortchange the man and his wonderful poetry.
