Dewan-e-Ghalib is a volume of selected verse – a selection of “ghazals” made by the author, Mirza Ghalib, himself with help from his close and learned friends. The Dewan was compiled and first published in 1849. The current copy uses a modern font and comes with an index of first lines.

Mirza Ghalib was born in Kala Mahal in Agra, the city of Taj Mahal, in 1797. Muhammad Hussain Azad, a biographer, says, “What an inborn temperament he brought with him! One that created such high flight in his ideas, such meaning-creation in his mind, such style in his thoughts, innovative constructs in his words, and a novel path in his composition.” He died at the age of 73 in 1869.
