My first introduction to the work of Farah Rose Smith, and it did not disappoint. A chapbook published by Ulthar Press, The Visitor is about Rook, a musician in a goth rock band, who longs for fame and fortune. Her desire for wealth is so great, that she allows herself to be seduced by a being known only as the Visitor, from a place called the Afterworld. Rook travels to the Afterworld in her sleep, and receives lessons from the Visitor. Unfortunately, she cannot remember the sounds in her wakin...
The mood is Lovecraft meets the 27 Club by way of an identity-disintegrating bad trip in this poetic piece that does not overstay its welcome.
Full review from my websiteFarah Rose Smith's "The Visitor" does not serve simply as a delivery system for a riff on the Faustian bargain narrative; it showcases its author's obvious attentiveness to each and every sentence, to how the lines sound and feel. This is the kind of fiction that begs to be read aloud. I find it difficult to describe good prose, but Smith writes with a seemingly effortless elegance that reminds me of some of the genre's best stylists: think Kathe Koja, Anne Rice, Thoma...
On the one hand, this was tropey as hell. I felt like I was reading about Lestat again. The decadant, demonic, darkly romantic rocker archetype has all the originality of Hot Topic, and yet there's also a reason it's proven so popular and persistent. The associated imagery and links to the Gothic and horror traditions are damn fun to play with. The excerpt from her upcoming novel ANONYMA seemed very promising.
This is two short stories, one of them the title story and one is a preview from the upcoming (?) Anonyma. The first story starts well with the depiction of the Afterworld but I found the rest not quite interesting enough. Something about the way the rock and roll/goth/decadent milieu was depicted seemed just a bit too familiar, maybe cliched. Second story was far more interesting, simply an interview with an architect, good enough to save this book from two stars, despite again feeling that per...
Lush, gothic, romantic prose and a disquieting story combine in a fascinating story of wishes granted and dreams destroyed. Highly recommended to fans of early Anne Rice and Tanith Lee
A short, heady tale of diabolus in musicaWith a rich, almost decadent prose style and a classic deal with a devil, at a crossroads of dream and reality, this short story stands out for its vision of the demonic and the fugue like depiction of the hapless mortal's disintegration. An interesting introduction to a relatively new author's voice.
Awesome short story for anyone whose a fan of gothic supernatural fiction and music. Possession, magic, and dreams are intricate parts of this tale in which a woman assists a strange being into our world, only to face strange consequences. Written in a fluent but poetic style with enchanting imagery. Great balance of action, dialogue, plot, and prose. I recommend this to horror and dark fantasy fans of Barker and Gaiman. What follows The Visitor is a sneak peek preview into a work which is also w...
