This is a book for young people and is a beautifully written account narrated by a young girl. Her home is in the Ottawa valley and a dam is being constructed that will flood some of the farmland in the community. It is a good depiction of the progression of humans effect on the landscape and its effect on the residents
My favorite part is the 300 million year old fossil arthropod and all the crazy things the townspeople think about it (“I hear tell ya found a dragon down there.”) That's exactly the kind of stuff people make up when they spend more time running their mouths than listening and learning. Now I need to find the other books about the town of Low on the Gatineau River.
This was a nice little book. The writing was lovely and the characters were very vivid. It just fell short for me. The plot was uninteresting and after I finished it, it just kind of seemed like a waste of time. Very forgettable. I did enjoy it to an extent while reading it, but it left no impact on me and is definitely something I would've passed on if this wasn't for school.
