I love this book. The artwork is amazing and the story is very good. The more I read this, and still love it, the more I feel there are some gaps that keep it from being universally loved. It seems like there could have been another comic book or two in it's original run that could have fleshed out some things.
Ugh. I had to drag myself through this. The story is boring, the art is inconsistent ranging from mediocre to awful, and like no other story I've read (even Lord of the Rings, which executes this perfectly) it assumes you already know who everyone is and why they exist in the story. And are my protagonists, the ones I'm rooting for, a militaristic arm of a theocracy? That leaves an awful taste in my mouth. I'll be ditching volumes two and three of this, which I'm sorry to say I paid a pretty pen...
The Monkey King Howls as Hotok BurnsI love the kind of fiction that gives me a chance to gaze upon a world I have never seen; the more immersive, the better. I hold a special place in my heart for world designers. The sheer depth of vision needed to create on that scale astounds me. In comics this can be especially potent, because the vision is not simply told but shown. The imagination can be an incredible framing device for the universal struggles of daily, present tense, life. This is why we a...
An interesting story. The weight of the fictional universe and all its fictional jargon (there is a TON) is oppressive—for about the first 2/3s I wasn't sure if there was one main character, or two, because he went by a few names. But Moeller's art and writing are good enough that it remained enjoyable. The build-up to the climax was thrilling; the explanatory text and battleplans that comprised the climax were not.Altogether an overlooked gem.
I love the art (well drawn and reminds of me a more sober Metabarons version), the details, the world that seems familiar yet alien. The story itself in Faith Conquers is more of an introduction of the threat and of the world of Iron Empires and I think it manages to find the right balance between throwing the reader into the world and explaining it to him. What struck me sometimes as a little off was that while the world sounds detailed and realistic, the main hero is the all mastering super fi...
The human galactic empire has past it's glory days. Political and religious infighting in the days of decay are made the worse by the threat of nearly undetectable alien threat. The worm like Vaylen are capable of infesting a hosts brain and controlling their body, make them literally an insider threat. I'm an absolute fan of both Christopher Moeller's painting style and his Iron Empires universe. I read Faith Conquers when it came out in 1994, and re-read it ever few years. While it's companion...
Interesting introduction to the world of the Iron Empires. The story and art are both excellent and quite immersive; you find out details as you go along, and by the time you're done, you are hooked and wanting more.On a gaming aside, there was no way this world would be translated into a roleplaying game without it being based on Luke Crane's Burning Wheel. The thematic parallels are way to obvious to pass up.Looking forward to the next collection.
The first story set in the Iron Empires universe that inspired the Burning Empires RPG. It's a dark setting where humanity finds itself in a dark age beset by a threat that may eventually lead to its extinction: a race of worm-like parasites that take over control of the humans they infect. The story is good, and the artwork is excellent. I find the artist's taste in the visuals of technology are very much to my taste.
I've had this book in my possession for a while, and whenever I would sit down to read it, something would interrupt. It was recommended by one of my best friends and gaming buddies. He recommended the Burning Empires book from the Burning Wheel ttrpg, and emphatically suggested I read the graphic novels.I was able to get them all in Gencon a few years back, and today I deemed it necessary to dedicate the time and respect it deserved.Bleak and brutal, Faith Conquers introduces us into a wonderful...
I was impressed! Beautiful painted art from the author himself! Interesting world building, good character, excellent battles. The plot twists were a little convoluted, but overall the story was followable. Looking forward to reading volume two.
Mark brought this to read at the beach, and once he finished with it, I picked it up. He says it makes more sense if you play one of the miniature war games that he does, since it's essentially set in the same universe, but I liked it for the art. Good art will go a long way with me. The only reason it didn't get higher stars from me is that the plot didn't draw me in as much as I usually like. But for a superfast 1 or 2 hour read, it was good.
