Powerful poetry to see each of the young people in the class. Their voices in the poems remind us all to "listen between the lines."
A book of poems about real kids in urban schools. It can teach you to read between the lines and feel what the poems are saying.
This book is told in poems of alternating voices for six diverse students. The commonality is that throughout the day all minds wander regardless of who we are. Each student has a different outlook and different thoughts, but their words speak volumes about their life situations.
omg the blurb makes a big mistake, implying that Tyrell is 'bound for trouble'He's a child! All he wants is to be free. Read between the lines - apparently he lives alone with his grandmother and she's not quite competent, filling his imagination with Moving to Louisiana (Where it Snows) into a house of their own... but at the same time she cares enough to 'do his hair so carefully. A poetry book expressed from different students in an inner city school. The poems are very heart felt and creative. I would recommend this book of the setting is true to you; for students who are older aged elementary aged students.
Genre: Poetry Age Range: Primary This is a beautiful poetry book told from six inner city kids point of view. I think you could really use this book during a poetry lesson. It will also give kids a window into someone else's life. Also the illustrations make you feel as though you are there.
A look at six children's experiences in the same class. I do wish that one hadn't been labeled a "problem child" quite so heavily, but overall, it's a really interesting look at different perspectives in one class.

Personal Reaction: I personally really enjoyed this book. It is a collection of free verse poems written by third graders, and the watercolor illustrations bring life into each of their stories. Reading strategy--inferring A picture book, novel in verse. Authentic kids in an urban setting.
I read this story to my third grade students. It was a book with a variety of poems written by third grade students. At the time, we were talking about poetry and I wanted to share with them something that could give them confidence in their writing. As as teacher, I would use the poems in this story to teach imagery. I will have the students to close their eyes and visualize the poem as I am reading it aloud. We will discuss the imagery as a class.

A great book of poems for children! The literacy content within each poem is very strong and obvious. The poems almost enter a sing-song voice of a child when reading the poems.
