Okay let me get it
Deja's 8th birthday is rapidly approaching, and she is making a big production of it. She has a party planned, but her plans may be ruined do to unforeseen circumstances. As the day of her party gets closer Deja realizes that somethings are more important than being the center of attention.
Early chapter book about two young girls dealing with birthday party issues. Deja is so excited for her party that she tells everyone at school about it. But before she can hand out her invitations, a girl in her class decides to have a "just because" party on the same day. Soon, everyone is talking about the other party, and no one even mentions Deja's party. Will anyone show up to her birthday party?
I really liked the book its really great my faves character was the lady with all the old candy.!!!!
10/17/2018 ~~ A long anticipated birthday party looks like it might be wrecked by the drama of friendships and jealousies in an elementary classroom. I also appreciated that Deja lives with her aunt; in this book we learn that her mother has passed away and her father is chronically absent. In addition to having characters of color, this book could also be a mirror book for my students who don't live in a "typical" 2 parent family. In this book, the characters are a bit more "ageless" than in the...
Cute little chapter book about second graders. Most of the characters are African American, as is the little neighborhood they live in. Part of a larger series about these two friends. In this one, Deja has a birthday party but drama ensues with a rival classmate decides to throw a “just because” party on the same day. Subplot about staying with a little old lady for a week and learning to accept her and her little old lady ways. I thought the ending was too short and didn’t achieve any true res...
This will be a perfect book to use one day if i teach like second or third grade. I loved this book and can see kids loving it too.
A book about two little girls who are best friends, and Deja's birthday is coming up! Then the new girl on the block is throwing a party on the same day 'just because...'!
The second installment of a chapter book series featuring African American characters. Even with the diversity movement in children's books, chapter books (always a second cousin) have been primarily left out. The dearth of chapter books for PoC, coupled with the fact that this is authentically rendered realistic fiction, make this chapter book series an important contribution to the canon of children's literature. The writing is solid. Both the neighborhood and the school feel genuine. Written b...
Nikki & Deja are third graders, best friends living next door to each other. Deja can't stop thinking about her birthday party, and Nikki tries to be patient and helpful. But just before her birthday, Deja's aunt leaves on a business trip and Deja has to stay with an eldery neighbor - who cooks turnips and watches a black & white TV! Deja's nemisis from school, Antonia, threatens to ruin Deja's party by throwing her own "just because" party on the same day. Will Deja's party turn out OK -- or wi...
Cute series!
