Another mediocre forgettable arc. World: Okay art that is par for the course, nothing that really stands out here. The world building is interesting at least, there is the stuff with the FF which is fun and deals with one of the issues from 'One More Day' and then there's the mayor stuff and the same old same old. Story: The pacing is fine, the writing is fine, and the stakes are fine but it's all be done before and nothing is fresh. It's JJJ doing the same and Spidey doing the same and nothing
Deep in the weeds of the worst of brand new day, I see a glimmer of hope that maybe something will be interesting in the next hundred issues between here and superior. Maybe?
Collects Amazing Spider-Man issues #589-594, the Wolverine/Spider-Man team-up from Amazing Spider-Man: Extra! issue #2, and the Ana Kraven story from Amazing Spider-Man: Extra! issue #3A team of Spider-Man writers (including Dan Slott, Mark Waid, Fred Van Lente, Zeb Wells, and Phil Jimenez) put together a bunch of great stories in this volume. The villain known as the Spot returns.Plus, Spider-Man teams up with the Fantastic Four as they travel to the Macroverse. I enjoyed this story quite a bit...
Second half of this with the Vulture and Mayor Jameson is as very fun. I wish more writers would lean into the idea that saving people is obsessive behavior for Peter. This story did a good job with that. The FF story was fine, but I always struggle with stories that mostly exist to respond to other stories.
Paulo Siquero's art is fantastic. McCone's is meh. The FFstoryline isn't terrible, but the only point seemed to be to remove Peter from the timeline for two months and I think Spideys writers have fucked with timelines enough. Still, Jameson being mayor is awesome. Can't imagine his dad and aunt may lasting more than 20 issues though. New vulture was kind of lame and about the million in a line, and we don't need to see Peter naked in a meet cute with his new roomy.
This was quite fun! Peter and FF go to the Macroverse again but this time they get lost in there for quite some time and we see that a civil war between the Dregans and a guy called Patronus has been going on for quite some time and its becoming a lot for Peter to take in and there is the squabble with Johnny about secret identity and all, and its fascinating to see that but then peace comes in and we see a montage of events that transpire quickly since they have been trapped here for a long tim...
After most of the mess of Brand New Day got sorted out in the last book it is nice to kind of hit the reset button and have a book that almost feels like classic Spidey. He works with the Fantastic 4 and then spends a lot of time pissing of JJJ. It doesn't get much more classic then that. The wolverine story in here is great. It shows why the two work well together and is touching in a simple way. Worth a read for that story alone.
I was reading this mainly to figure out where I am in Slott's Spidey run to jump back in. His story was great. The others had various leveles of quality. Still - Spidey - always a great character.
Nothing particularly special about this, just kind of all-around good (albeit with a strangely abrupt segue into the next storyline).
I have tried my hand at a couple post Brand New Day story lines and I am very pleased with the direction that Marvel took Amazing Spider-Man in. I feel it is a great mix of the old Parker luck, Peter's personal life, and his life as Spider-Man. It was very interesting that a central conflict between him and the Fantastic Four was his identity being hidden away instead of the issues with the Macroverse. I am glad that he started sharing his identity, it shows more trust between him and his fellow...
This trade collects Amazing Spider-Man issues #589-594, and a story from Extra! #2. The majority of this collection is comprised of the two-issue team-up with the Fantastic Four titled "Face Front" and the three issue resulting story that the trade is named for. It's difficult to summarize without spoilers because a lot of significant things happen, rapidly and somewhat in sequence. I can say that the FF story deals with some of the side effects of the "One More Day" mindwipe, that 24/7 manages
The oddity that is the Brand New Day reality of Spider-Man is not something you think about a lot. It was a quick fix where he makes a deal with the literal Devil and manages to make everyone forget his secret identity. But it's only in books like this one that writers really start to explore what this means including people that Peter had once trusted with his secret identity no longer know who he is. Cue the Fantastic Four and their long-running history with Spider-Man and how in many instance...
3.5. The main plotline has Spidey and the FF taking off for a subatomic universe where they rebuild their relationship. When they get back, two months have passed, so Spidey decides if Peter's been gone two months (during which May gets a boyfriend and Jonah becomes mayor) he might as well stay in costume 24/7. A couple of unrelated standalones fill out the volume. Solid, though not stellar.
Fred Van Lente --who wrote ASM#598 in this-- should be writing more SPidey, so I hope to see him back on the book soon. A short story with Wolverine and Spidey from one of the BND EXTRA's was pretty decent too. Everything else was kinda bland for me. The FF/SPIDEY team-up used being in the 'microverse' as an interesting plot device as a way to fast forward the regular universe's story (1 hour in microverse is like 2 days in the real world-- or something like that). And I didn't even finish the l...
Team ups are great and Spidey with the Fantastic Four was a treat as well as Wolverine's Birthday party. I loved what Spidey did to the Vulture at the end. The one thing though that bothers me, and has always bothered me about Spidey, is the forced oppression on him. Yes, people can be very short-sighted and stupid, but people cheering Spidey as a hero one second and then claiming he's a menace the next, for no reason, despite being a hero and saving them both times, makes absolutely no sense. I...
I liked this book. This is about Peter Parker and the Fantastic 4 going about something that is going to change their future. When Spidey's done doing things with the Fantastic 4 he realizes that things are not the same and now he is going to be able to mess with J. Jonah Jameson. It was a fun book and I liked that Spidey did in this book. It was interesting to see what he was doing with the Fantastic 4 and how that shaped what they have to deal when they got back from their adventure. I liked the...
After the great story of the last volume this was somewhat of a let down. The Fantastic Four story was actually quite sweet, whimsical and entertaining and it's starting to address the fact that they've all forgotten who SM is. The 24/7 storyline though is poor. After the set up of the last volume this takes it in a ludicrous way. It's never really explained how JJJ became Mayor, Peter's behaviour is rather odd and the random references to Norman seem off kilter and mis-placed. The ending with P...
The Kraven and Spot stories are both interesting character pieces, but whereas the Kraven story is never particularly exciting [5/10], the Spot story manages a bit better [6/10]. Zeb Wells' spidey & wolvie team-up is as delightful as such things usually are [7/10]. The "Face Front" story is fun and a welcome reversal of at least a small part of OMD's vast stupidity, but also a bit slow [7/10]. Though, Spider-Man's 24/7 crusade is a bit silly, the final story is the volume is good, with some nice...
