A young boy finds a pogo stick at a yard sale. He buys it and goes hopping throughout the city...eventually ending up at his grandmother's house where they both go hopping together to a picnic.A very basic beginning-to-read book with repetitive phrases and illustrations that exactly match the text to help early readers.
In this recent Geisel award honoree, a little boy hops to make a picnic for him and his grandma. It's largely a wordless picture book with the exception of a couple of simple sentences and words that might make a beginning reader feel very proud to have read an entire book.
Simple verse tells the tale of what happens when a young boy buys a pogo stick from a yard sale, and then goes food shopping while hopping on it.

Very simple easy reader. Boy goes shopping on a pogo stick and then goes on a picnic with Grandma. Rounded up because i liked the pogo hopping Grandma.
I boy jumps on his pogo stick, gathers ingredients for lunch, and stops at grandma’s house. Grandma jumps on her pogo stick and together they head to the park for a picnic.
A little boy finds a pogo stick at a yard sale and hops down the road, to the deli for cheese, the grocers for apples, and the bakery for bread - he has important plans for lunch with someone special. Guided level C reader with very few words - in fact, the story is completely carried by the darling illustrations. The boy is so happy and it's fun to see each thing he buys in his knapsack afterwards. Is this the same boy from "I See" and "I Dig"?Crossposted to http://kissthebookjr.blogspot.com
It's a good reader for beginning readers. The low word count and illustrations are great! It's a fun and relatable story of a boy getting food for a picnic with his grandmother. I wish that there was a page after he buys the apples and bread showing him paying again, like there is after he buys the cheese. It would be a longer book, but the repetition of "I pay." would reinforce the words.
We've certainly come a long way from "see spot" books! This book has simple phrases but I love the accompanying illustrations and the fact that the simple phrases do tell a story. It's not just random stuff. I also love the little surprise (view spoiler)[ of his grandma hopping with him! (hide spoiler)].
I thought for a minute that we were going to lose track of what happened with the cheese and bread, but things righted themselves by the end.Read for Librarian Book Group.
Beginning Reader with Latinx characters. Nice addition tonthe series.
A great reader for kids just starting out.
Limited vocab for a story about a boy and his new pogo stick. Fun surprise ending.
Perfect for very new readers—simple language and sentences of generally three words with illustrations that bring the words to vivid, active life.
With lively illustrations created with Adobe Photoshop and repetitive text, this early reader book will support youngsters as they begin reading simple words such as "hop." In the story, a boy and his older brother or maybe even his father find a pogo stick and a helmet among the discards from a yard sale, and the youngster proceeds to hop all through town, collecting various foods, including an apple, cheese, and bread, for a picnic in the park. Readers won't realize that he's gathered these de...
3/20/2022 ~ Vivid illustrations with a powerful sense of movement. Predictable text with good repetition and strong illustration support on pages where new words are introduced. Great twist at the end when Grandma joins the boy in bouncing on a pogo stick to the park for a picnic.2022 Geisel Honor
2/3/2022 Full review tk at TheFrumiousConsortium.net.2/4/2022 This book is such a breath of fresh air for early readers and, especially, for the people who love them. Perhaps I just haven't been reading the right books with my kids, but most of the books written for this market tend to feature either really smarmy or really annoying characters, often repeating things (as they need to in order to strengthen reading recognition) in ways that feel artificial. I Hop does not have any of these proble...
There aren't a lot of books written about pogo sticks! But this is definitely a cute one. Our young protagonist finds a pogo stick. Dad puts a helmet on his head and off he goes to visit his grandmother! As a grandmother myself, I must say that I loved the ending. The book is perfect for the beginning reader with simple words and lots of pictures to help readers decipher a word if they are unsure of it. I'm happy this won a Geisel Honor Award.
Very few words, but they don't feel like they're a limited word list like early Bob Books, for example.A boy has a pogo stick. He hops to buy things for a picnic with his grandmother.
