This book was cute, but not one I would read in my future classroom. It was simple, mostly about the world being your oyster really and then the small lesson of don't lose your parents in public areas. I think it can be a touchy subject in certain classrooms so I would have to consider my classroom before choosing to read it.
3.5 Stars - I am using this picture book for my polar bear themed storytime. Cute book about how big the world seems to a lost baby polar bear who has lost his mother. The heavy painterly styled artwork that the illustrator uses is a great representation of the harsh arctic climate.
A young polar bear cub experiences the big world with his mother for the first time.
Cub's world is small. It was just him and his mom until one day his mom wanders out of the cave. Outside the world is big and bright and full of new things to see. This is such a touching story about the bond between a mother and her baby, about parenting, and about childhood. The perfect book for any mother who wants to reassure their baby that "The world is big. I'll be close by till you're big, too." 2+
A polar bear explores and finds the world to be big Big BIG! She rolls down a hill and loses sight of her mother. She looks for her mother's black nose amidst all the white of her world. She ends up following lots of other animals around until her mother catches up with her.Good for preschool or toddler storytimes.
When cub first discovers the world outside his den the world is bright and big but also exciting and fast, and a bit scary if you don’t have mom nearby. Cub explores going up the hill and how much fun it is to slide down that same hill until he loses mom. All he can remember is her soft, wet, black nose. He goes after everything that reminds him of her- a black raven, a ermine, and a seal until he decides to go up the hill and tumbles back into mom’s soft snowed covered body. The illustrations p...
This was a super fun read with a great message for kids about the outside world, away from home and the new, sometimes scary experiences out there. It is about a polar bear who is safe in his own world with his mom and then gets separated from her and lost in the big world! Eventually, when his mother and him find each other he feels safe at home and his mom says she will always stay close until he is bigger. It has rhyming words and amazing illustrations! This would be an awesome read aloud boo...
A short and sweet are-you-my-mommy story set in the far north. After emerging from a snowy den, a curious polar bear cub encounters arctic fauna after tumbling down a slippery slope - and away from mama bear. The drama peaks with a two-page spread showing cub all alone in a white wilderness, but cub proceeds with resilience until she and her mother are reunited in a comforting close.Lots of colors, sizes, actions, and sounds make it a great pre-school read aloud. The book could benefit from an a...
Booklist (November 15, 2013 (Vol. 110, No. 6))Preschool-Kindergarten. A great deal of warmth permeates this lovely story of the cold arctic and a polar bear cub’s first exploration outside the cave in which he was born. The golden tinge given to his and his mother’s fur plays off the cool blues and greens Cepeda uses to depict snow, sea water, and the aurora borealis. Playful movements and the swirl of Cepeda’s thickly applied paint will lead little eyes through cub’s adventures slipping down ic...

Enjoyable story. Worked great for my polar bear storytime. Loved the illustrations and the focus on mama and cub.
With simple text and lovely illustrations this book tells the story of a polar bear cub and the bond she has with her mother. This is a beautiful book, beautifully written and the love Mama polar bear feels for her cub is clearly felt by the reader. Little cub does what all little ones do - she wanders off - and then gets lost in the big, snow-covered world. She hunts for her mom and, of course, finds her and the reader is treated to a joyful reunion.
”Dear Cub,” said Mom. “The world is big. I’ll be close by till you’re big, too.” This is the point in the story where I went from liking this sweet little picture book to loving it! Awwww. A tale of a cub and his mother who get separated while walking around their bleak ice world. A good book to share with your little cub, or for young readers seeking an independent read.
The illustrations in this book are beautiful! It is a heartwarming story about a polar bear cub and her mom. The words are simple, the sentences are short, and the story is clear. It is lovely to look at! Good for ECE level readers.
