A primer for new educators and a review of best practices for experienced educators. The American educational system has a plethora of systemic issues. While some primary and secondary educators may have limited content knowledge , many post-secondary educators have limited pedagogical and andragogical knowledge. In addition, educators, policy-makers, students, parents, and community members seem to have divergent philosophies of education. Stakeholders seem confused as to the purpose of education. Is education limited to the Colonial goal of reading Christian scripture, the Industrial Revolutionary goal of creating a literate and problem-solving workforce, or the penultimate goal of learning for the sake of learning? In my area of education, is social studies a field of social criticism, or a norming activity for our melting pot nation of immigrants from around the world and from across the ethnic, racial, and religious spectrum? I tried to include all the things we, as teachers, are supposed to know but that either no one teaches us, or we forget along the way.
