A collection of short stories from a group of fabulous Latinx authors that leaves you wanting more and more.
A great anthology with a mix of story genres but with the common thread of all coming from Latinx culture. My favorites were the bitterly cynical "Turistas" by Hector Acosta dealing with coyote tourism at the border and cultural revenge; "The Sundowner" about a wholly different kind of monster which actually made me laugh out loud at points; and "Bobo" by Richie Narvaez and the way it told the story as a one-sided phone conversation. Definitely worth picking up.
Two of the short stories in this anthology, "Turistas" by Hector Acosta, and "Red Zone" by Alex Segura, can be read for free at https://downandoutbooks.com/2020-anth...
My review of ¡Pa’Que Tu Lo Sepas! can be found at High Fever Books. In September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico, killing thousands, displacing many more, and wreaked catastrophic devastation, so much so that it’s regarded as the worst natural disaster to have ever affected the island. Unfortunately, to make matters worse, Donald Trump was president* of the United States at the time. It was a perfect storm, and a perfect storm of massive fucking assholishness on part o...
On his podcast, the bastard title, Colon described the collection as unapologetically Latinx and I would say that there are elements of the stories that I possibly don't fully understand and there is plenty of Spanish phrases that I more than likely mangled and didn't understand, but I understand the universal language of great storytelling. The collections ranges in genre type, but where most anthologies have ups and downs this one is extremely consistent and I think the variation in genre defi...
This is one of the best anthologies I've ever read. Every story in it was excellent, and there was such a breadth of subject matter, execution, and tone. Each one showcases its author's unique narrative voice, and I enjoyed all of them. The common thread between them was Latinx voice, which just accentuated the variation in the anthology. As Colon illustrates in his introduction, there is no one Latinx voice, but somehow when gathered together you can see the similarities in certain aspects of h...
Anthologies are a weird thing consisting of many voices. I have read many and some I admit didn't quite do it for me. However, others I have found to be bang on. Pa'Que Tu Lo Sepas! falls into the latter category, and Angel Luis Colon, editor and Commander-in-Chief, he packs this collection with some fine entertainment. From ghosts to Groupons to people receiving everything they deserve. You will also find shootouts within, people rising to the occasion, and a pregnancy that holds. Some stories
Particularly enjoyed The Bones of Rio Rico by David Bowles, Bobby's Leave by Desiree Zamorano, and Bobo by Richie Narvaez which slammed me back in memory to Puerto Rico.
