Quick read. Interesting story. Language is a bit much.I received this book from Goodreads First Reads.
A short, sharp, smack to the face - this is a great read that gives you everything you ask for but leaves you wanting more. Blacky Jaguar is a great character along the lines of Anthony Neil Smith's Billy Lafitte and Josh Stalling's Moses McGuire - flawed, dark, desperate and ready for anything. Hopefully there's more in the works from Angel Luis Colon because you get the sense that there's a lot more to the Blacky Jaguar story to come!
This novella doesn't waste time with set-up, exposition, introductions, prologues or any other bits of literary lollygagging. It jumps right out from the first paragraph at a full sprint and never stops until the end. Someone has stolen Polly, Blacky Jaguar's beloved 1959 Plymouth Fury. It turns out that Blacky is a crazy Irish badass and he'll stop at nothing to get Polly back and give the thieving bastards a right proper beatdown. "I ain't beyond a little old-fashioned revenge." It's...
I SO loved this novella. Off to find more of Blacky, and Chen and Angel Luis Colon!
Subtle is not a word Blacky Jaguar is familiar with. The ex-IRA enforcer, formerly known as Danny Clarke, lives his life at two speeds: idling or pushing the redline—there is no in-between.So when his beloved 1959 Plymouth Fury goes missing, Blacky launches his own personal crusade to get the car back, and woe be it to whoever took his beloved “Polly,” or anyone standing between him and the goal of retrieving his ride.Unfortunately for Blacky, once he starts down the warpath his familiar brand o...
A wild, mayhem-filled ride!"This was his steady state—boiling blood, split knuckles, and new bruises." Don't mess with Blacky's car! Reminding me a little of John Wick, Blacky is a loaded weapon of a character driven by a single purpose in this story: to recover his stolen, aptly named 1959 Plymouth Fury. The violence in a breathless, cartoonist whoosh as Blacky ultimately finds himself an accidental hero. His essential nature remains unchanged though, and that is what I am looking forward to mo...
Angel Luis Colón's The Fury of Blacky Jaguar (One Eyed Press) tells the story of Blacky Jaguar, an Irish criminal looking for Polly in the New York metropolitan area. The first chapter begins with Blacky beating questioning an old associate in an auto mechanic's garage. Blacky gives zero fucks but does so with a smile. To say that the first chapter finally winds down is an understatement to the runaway feeling the reader experiences as Blacky's violence remains at full throttle throughout. Af...
Cost me less than a double espresso and gave me twice the jolt. Angel Colon's prose is like a Prime Mike Tyson fight: seek and destroy with no wasted movements. He (like Blacky Jaguar) is on a mission to deliver a graceful bludgeoning and drop some clever dialogue. The knockout comes fast and is one for the highlight reels.
This is fast-paced, vivid, and bursting with character. It balances grit with humor very effectively and the fight scenes kick ass. The style is lean and punchy--a fine fit with its genre. I thought the use of fragments was a bit overdone and it started to bug a bit, but it wasn't enough to sour the rest. I'll be checking out Blacky's next adventure, for sure.
Smash Bang Wallop! This is a no nonsense bloody novella featuring a gangly, pompadoured ex-IRA wildman as the lead character (the Blacky Jaguar of the title) who is introduced to us by way of beating and shooting a man in his search for someone named Polly. Special Agent Linda Chen has a past with Blacky both as a law enforcement officer and more with their past merely hinted at throughout the novella. There are smatterings of back story here, but the focus is on pulsating "holy shit" action and...
Really fun, wild story. Great fight scenes. Really enjoyed the cast of characters. Blacky Jaguar is a lovable deplorable fellow and I'm looking forward to reading more of his adventures.
A brilliant pulpy wonder with a winking eye of acid black humor.
Fast and Fun with a Fuckton of FightsYou know that movie you love that starts hard and then accelerates, never letting you look away, let alone catch your breath? (I’m looking at you Fury Road!) Yeah, The Fury of Blacky Jaguar is exactly like that. All the action is centre-frame and it never lets up.Blacky Jaguar is an ex-IRA tough guy with a tendency to take things too far. When his beloved Plymouth Fury is stolen, he lays down a swath of destruction starting in Staten Island and ending up in T...
I've gotten better at reviews. At least I hope I have. Anyway, realized I never reviewed this book here on the Goodreads. Better late than never would apply here I do believe. From Amazon, in its entirety.Loved Blacky. Have enjoyed Angel's writing for sometime now. Highly recommend. I especially enjoyed the midget.Feb 4, 2018
Lean and fast writing, snappy dialogue and an ex-IRA hard man. What's not to love? Blacky Jaguar is on a mission to find his stolen car, and there isn't a damn thing that will stand in his way. Angel Colon drops you into the action from page one, and doesn't let up.Buy this book, or you'll wind up on Blacky Jaguar's bad side.
Violent pulp novella about an ex-IRA killer going on a mayhem spree across the Bronx after his 1959 Plymouth Fury is stolen. Not much subtlety here just a whole lot of mayhem and violence. A fun book to spend an afternoon reading.
This nitro funny car runs its race fast -- one quick shot is all you need to take it in. Back story? There's a trace, but that's beside the point. It would just get in the way of what Angel Colón wants to achieve here, and that's to get out of the gate immediately and not let up. I'd welcome another adventure with Blacky, and the nasty Bronx turf depicted here (a Colón specialty) is a fertile story setting.
