A new author for me and I'm glad of the find. Very light hearted storytelling with funny banter between the magician and his four foot tall sidekick. It also has darker moments, death and deception; enough to make for a good story.The Long Look is the magician's ability (or curse) to see possible futures. This book is so good that I can't remember a thing about it. True, it's been a few years since I read it but I figure something would come to me. Nope, a complete blank.
It started out great, but then disappointed. It needed more "evil deeds."
I have been a fan of many of Parks's more recent works such as the Yamada Monogatari series.This older novel shows the same sense of wit with both protagonists and agonists being intelligent, a clever plot, and with good action. Somehow it didn't hold my attention like the later stories and novels. Still, I enjoyed reading it even if it grabbed my imagination less. You can do much worse...
A nicely written fantasy with a standard backdrop of circa-medieval kingdoms, a beautiful princess, a heroic prince, an evil wizard, and an imminent power struggle over succession to the throne.
