On the Wings of the Wind: The first flight around the world in a motor glider (Mundo Moss Book 3)

On the Wings of the Wind: The first flight around the world in a motor glider (Mundo Moss Book 3)

Gérard Moss
5/5 ( ratings)
The book describes a flight around the world made in 2001 in a small Ximango motor-glider built in Brazil. The pilot, Gérard Moss, had already circumnavigated the world in a single-engine plane with his wife, Margi. This time, he flew off on this physically and aeronautically challenging journey, mostly alone, passing through 30 countries. This flight, which took 100 days, covered 55,000 km in an aircraft not designed for long voyages. Gérard overcame innumerous obstacles, including the monsoons in Asia and the long, solitary crossing of the South Atlantic, from Cape Verde to Brazil. He was intercepted on three occasions by fighter jets and was detained in Vietnam after landing at an unauthorized airport due to bad weather.
“Visual flights lasting several hours at low altitudes, crossing all the latitudes and facing difficult and extreme conditions. This demands from a pilot not only significant professionalism, but also a solid constitution and great courage. Gérard has all these qualities, as he has already proven before. But this latest flight around the world was even more noteworthy, and will always remain as an impressive and magnificent expedition that deserves a place in the great book of the world’s best adventures.” René Fournier, French engineer who designed the first motor-glider in 1947 and, later on, the RF-10, named Ximango in Brazil.
