Ilan Stavans is one of the best known and most prolific Latino academics. He is the Lewis-Sebring Professor in Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College. His list of publications is long and varied. It includes scholarly monographs, trade books, anthologies , conversations, translations, editions, fiction, poetry, graphic novels, and a children’s book. He hosted a PBS television show for years and appears regularly on NPR and in the New York Times. A collection of his essays was published as The Essential Ilan Stavans . Pitt Press published The Wall in 2018, and we have one book under contract and another under review. This high profile, which is not unrelated to a penchant for self-promotion, attracts a fair amount of both positive and negative criticism from inside and outside the academy. This is a brief study of his work.
