The 2nd Civil War Book 1: Charlottesville After Unite the Right, Some Truth, Mostly Fiction

The 2nd Civil War Book 1: Charlottesville After Unite the Right, Some Truth, Mostly Fiction

"The only good thing to come from the Unite the Right long-weekend of terror was that it made me get sober." -protagonist Tony Moore

There were no "very fine people" among the Alt-Right protestors on August 12th. About that, President Trump was dead wrong. Any patriotic Americans among them who were in Charlottesville solely to honor their heritage as some of the 70 million descendants of Confederate soldiers would never have shown up on Saturday morning after the tiki-torch assault on UVA grounds the night before in which hundreds chanted Nazi slogans in perfectly orchestrated unison. Those who were, somehow, unaware of that affront to everything this country stands for would have abandoned their protest the moment they realized that they were standing shoulder to shoulder with people carrying swastika banners and dressed for battle. This wasn't about heritage, it was about terror. Honest and true Americans with a sense of the area's history were used and exploited by thugs and criminals.

This unique book details Tony Moore's experience of the weekend as an alcoholic in crisis. The things he witnessed, including the impromptu parade of hundreds of White Supremacists from Lee Park to McIntire Park, really did happen but, because every journalist and law enforcement professional for miles was downtown, you don't know about it or the implications for the country. You all have moved on, but we in Charlottesville are still coming to grips with what happened and what will happen next time.

Tony gets sober and the story turns to a fictional, post-apocalyptic future, imagining what could be if we continue to chase red herrings and ignore the real danger posed by White Supremacists. The Heaphy Report, which was not shy about assigning blame to the city, CPD, and VSP as well as the protesters and counter-protesters, opens by mentioning what a miracle it was that there was only one fatality and one shot fired when so many armed combatants came together in such a small space. Whether or not the Alt-Right is successful in getting their permit for an anniversary rally-- it has been denied but a judge will rule on it in early summer--few people doubt that the town will host many more Antifa, Black Lives Matter, Alt-Right, and any other groups seeking the spotlight this time. Miracles don't often repeat themselves.

After all hell breaks loose at the imagined August 2018 reunion rallies, Odysseus-like Tony must get out of Charlottesville and make his way to New Jersey where his daughters and pregnant girlfriend rode out the chaos. But the power is out nationwide and the United States of America has descended into lawlessness. It will take every ounce of courage and cleverness Tony can muster to rejoin his family.
