A beautiful collection, full of genuinely spooky tales. Everything I want in my October and more -- so glad they've got another one coming out this year.
I love the Short Story Advent Calendars, so tried the Ghost Box, a Hallowe'en version. Beautifully presented (the box is amazing), and full of interesting spooky, scary, and creepy stories. George R R Martin's "The Pear-shaped Man" I think creeped me out the most. They are all very much worth reading, especially in celebration of Hallowe'en!
I'll buy one of these every year it comes out.
Rrrrrr goood
This is a box with a series of eerie/spooky short stories edited by Patton Oswalt. I’m quite sensitive to scary stories but none of these, save for the first and shortest was really very scary. The first story was an old fashioned, quite spooky, ghost story, that even thought I read in broad daylight, scared me quite thoroughly. This box was a fun read for October.
For something steeped in the macabre, check out the irresistible "Ghost Box," edited by comedian Patton Oswalt. This is the latest from Hingston & Olsen , a little Canadian publisher whose creations remind us what e-books can’t do.“The Ghost Box” is a collection of individually bound stories laid to rest in an elegant box that snaps shut like a tomb (maybe there’s a magnet; maybe it’s magic). The authors range from old masters like Arthur Machen and W.F. Harvey to still-living writers like Denni...
It's been a LONG time since I've read an anthology where all the stories were strong. The Best of Pulphouse might have been the last one, and I read that over twenty years ago. Then again, none of the anthologies I've read have been picking from horror stories published over the last 100+ years, so maybe that has something going for it.This is a novelty publication, printed in limited numbers, but most of the stories should be easily found either on the Internet (for the public domain stories) o...
Let's start with the box itself. It's an amazing small box beautifully designed and presented. The publisher's website announces a mission to do what e-books can't do and the box on sheer presentation alone is worth five stars (I do prefer the design of this box to the second volume released this year). Now, the stories. While I think anthologies, by their nature, are uneven, this collection is consistently strong. One area in which I think helped, is that none of the stories are introduced beyo...
A great little collection of creepy ghost stories in different genres. I am a sucker for packaging and each story is bound separately - making it seem more easily digestible. Writers range from the 20’s to modern day with a feature from George RR Martin.
If you happen to have The Ghost Box II, and are willing to sell it, please hit me up. I have the first and third boxes and would like to complete the set.
3.5-5/5 Some eerie, some creepy and some a little slow.
Took me forever to get around to reading this first instalment (second is on my shelf, waiting). I don’t generally do horror/scare/etc genre stories, but I decided to go outside my comfort zone for this.Glad I did.The stories in this collection are all over the map thematically, stylistically, and in horror rendered. Really enjoyed seeing how horror stories have evolved over time, as well as seeing what a broad category it is. Looking forward to cracking volume 2. Will be pre-ordering volume 3 w...
The format, the stories, the pleasure it brings! p.s. I have this year's edition that I am saving for the next year Halloween! LOL
A few years back, Oswalt created a short-story-a-day recommendation list to lead up to Halloween. Independent Canadian publisher Hingston & Olsen took this idea and ran with it, creating this wonderful handmade collection here. Think of an advent calendar, but each day offering a scary short story instead of a chocolate. The old is blended with the new here, and each story is individually bound as its own booklet. I’m a sucker for stuff like this, but it is really a gorgeous collection, and I kn...
I thoroughly enjoyed this set! It has a nice mix of old and new, and was very fun to read. I’d call the overall tone of the set creepy as opposed to scary, for the most part. It’s got a little bit of everything: ghosts, zombies, witches, and the simply unexplainable. I’d recommend it to any true horror fan.
