A sampler is only going to give you so much of the upcoming novel, but it should be enough to catch your interest. If the ten-fifteen pages don't get you excited, than I'd be tempted to pass on the book itself, no matter how well-known the author may be.This Del Rey sampler contains eleven excerpts from the work of that many novelists, working in various types of fantasy, from good ol' Sword & Sorcery (do they still use that term) to urban fantasy and space opera. Each excerpt was the first chapter, or part of the first chapter, from 11 different books of speculative fiction. Most of the titles were 2017 releases but 2 were from the first books in series that had new series releasing. Most of the excerpts intrigued me and there are several books I'll be adding to my wishlist. The samples included fantasy, urban fantasy, and science fiction as well as some YA. A good sampling of stories and series published in 2017.
