Equal Parts Julius, Baby of the World! and Kate Beaton's King Baby! this book should be a hit with the older sibling.
Okay, I enjoyed the story... but I LOVE the illustrations.
A decent offering in the "new baby" niche, which Sally Lloyd-Jones excels at. You know what would be cool? POC as main family members for once.
This story is cute, but the illustrations are the best.
I loved this! From the perspective of the older sister- hilarious asides.
First sentence: Once upon a time, there was a happy family: a mom, a dad, a gerbil, and the most beautifulest, cleverest, ever-so-kindest Princess with long, flowing wondrous hair. (In fact, actually she is ME!) Premise/plot: A big sister hates her new baby brother. Will these two ever be friends? My thoughts: I liked this one. The focus is on two siblings. We have the big sister princess who goes from being the center of attention to an orphan servant girl, from her perspective. We have the bab...
New baby woes for a very precocious child. The glam-70's illustrations are the bomb!
Told from the point of view of a little girl who is about to get a new baby brother, this picture book offers a great example of an unreliable narrator for small children. The little girl was in charge at first in a land where there was plenty of time for stories with both of her parents. Then the new baby arrived, King Baby, and everything turned into screaming, poop and attention for the baby. The princess had to share the bathroom, carry groceries, and soon became invisible to everyone. Then
Cute story of how a young girl's perfect life is ruined by a new despot on the scene - her baby brother.
You’ve gotta love a main character who wears tights on her head and whose parents look like they are from an episode of Three’s Company! Fun illustrations but storyline fell a little flat for me. It may have been that I just wasn’t in the mood for a whiny baby at the time I read it.
Life is rough when a calm family is invaded by a new baby. Where peace reigned, there is now a baby who has taken up his throne and has everyone dashing around to meet his every need. Parents who cannot get enough of dirty diapers and family that dote on him constantly. Protesting this new-found leader in the kingdom, our quiet Princess plots her revenge, only to see things take a different turn. Neo liked the story, but wanted more action and less “regular baby stuff” to happen. Good comments i...
...I mean, quite apart from the awesome big sister drama here, how could I feel anything but love for a book where Her Royal Highness Princess Protagonist spends the entire story wearing colored tights on her head to simulate long, flowing locks? (And that's not even including all the excellent 70s fashion the other characters sport throughout....)
Anyone who has had to share the spotlight will appreciate this book. A young girl has enjoyed all the attention in her family, until...a baby brother is born! Her parents have practically abandoned her for his Royal Highness - which is 100% true, from her point of view. After a year of servitude, it is time to celebrate the baby's first birthday. Well this sister has had enough! She changes into a mysterious fairy, set upon breaking the evil enchantment on the Land. But then the unexpected happe...
Author Sally Lloyd-Jones picture book starts with the challenges of being the first-born in the family, where one can easily develop the perspective that life will always be the way it is in the beginning of a family with one child receiving generally exclusive attention from loving parents. In almost blunt fashion, the first child gives her account of changed family life with the arrival of a newborn sibling. The author successfully depicts the sometimes strong feelings that an older sibling ca...
The King Baby thing has been done several times, but this one is still pretty good. I loved the inexpiable 70s fashion.
The fantastic, insanely-detailed '70s setting is what really makes this book special, and unique among modern picture books.
A story of a little girl, a "princess," who loses her spot as the only royalty in the family when a little boy joins. Thus tells the story of "His Royal Highness, King Baby," who rules the house.
Funny look at a growing family from the older (wiser, prettier, better) sibling. The princess is completely taken aback by the arrival of HRH the king baby.
King Baby introduces us to a perfectly lovely princess (an ordinary girl with pantyhose on her head for Rapunzel-esque locks) who regins supreme in her family until her baby brother is born and he usurps her throne. This book is just terrific. The words of the story are in the point of view of the main character, but the illustrations complexify the story in two particularly effective ways. First, the illustrator has included several of the protagonist’s own drawings as central elements of the a...
