Was not a fan of how the pets are treated in this book...
Super cute. Loved that it highlights an actual fountain in NY.
Very cute, but I spent far too much of the beginning of the book fretting about how they would get their goldfish back if they were all mixed up
Three children stuck in the city for the summer feel just like their goldfish stuck in a bowl....until one day, a sign goes up in the fountain near their apartment, advertising for a goldfish vacation! When they drop their goldfish off, they meet other children to play with and share stories with for the rest of the summer. Based on a true fountain and series of summers in NYC and inspired by some real characters.
Goldfish on Vacation by Sally Lloyd-Jones. PICTURE BOOK. Schwartz & Wade Books, 2017. $18. 9780385386111BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL - ADVISABLEAUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGEThere are three children who live in an apartment across from a beautiful, but run-down, fountain. The children are bored with their summer days until they see a sign on the fountain. It says that anyone with a goldfish should bring them soon for the goldfish to have a vacation. The fountain gets cleaned and filled with fresh water
The same-sex couple (appearing a little past the halfway point) is intentionally included to normalize that lifestyle. See the illustrator's acknowledgement here; Sally Lloyd-Jones retweeted a supportive tweet (on March 22, 2019) but later deleted it after pushback. A damage control update says that SLJ's assistant is the one who did the tweeting/deleting. The update really doesn't say much to alleviate any concerns.
Three New York City children - H, Little O and Baby Em - are stuck in their hot, stuffy apartment one summer, together with their Grandpa and their three goldfish. Things don't look so great, until the fountain in the local park is refurbished, and a sign is posted inviting the neighborhood children to bring their pet goldfish for a stay. It looks like the fish, and through them the children, might have a fun summer vacation after all...Apparently based upon a true story - from 1992 through 2005...
I love this and that is all you need to know. Because why shouldn't goldfish go on vacation?
Lovely picture book; I enjoyed reading this one to students! (Library)
Goldfish on Vacation is such a sweet book, and even cooler, it's based on a true story. My kids and I were able to research a little and read more about it. So much fun.
In “Goldfish on Vacation,” by Sally Lloyd-Jones, a dilapidated old fountain becomes a spiffy new home for goldfish in New York City in the summers from 1992 to 2005. That’s when goldfish in the Big Apple were released to bask in the waters of the Hamilton Fountain.Partially based on a true story, this picture book is a swimmingly superb read for summer break. It features three siblings, H, Little O and Em, who are tired to death of being cooped up in their apartment. Just like their goldfish, Ba...
In a small community in the middle of the city, three kids are stuck at home for the summer just like their goldfish are stuck in their bowls. But when the city decides to fix up the old fountain and asks for volunteer goldfish to take a summer vacation in the pond, things get a little more exciting for everyone. This story might be read as a little too far-fetched if it weren't based on a real event from a community in New York City. (Be sure to read the author's note in the back.) I like that i...
Three kids are excited to learn that the neglected fountain in their neighborhood is going to be renovated in time for summer, and that they (along with all the other kids in the hood) have been invited to bring their pet goldfish to live in the fountain for the summer. They watch the improvements with great interest, and on vacation day, line up with all the other kids to release their fish into the pond. Their grandfather shares stories about the fountain's heyday (when it was used to water ho...
Oh this book was fun! Three siblings, H, Little O, and Baby Em, who live with their Grandpa in an apartment in New York City. One day they spot a sign that offers a summer home for all interested goldfish. And sure enough, June 28th rolls around, the local fountain has been cleaned and filled with water and little pads, and dozens of children appear with their goldfish! Sally Lloyd-Jones story is based on actual events, which is sure to surprise readers when they get to the last page! Leo Espino...
A fun story about goldfish who went on 'vacation' in the neighborhood fountain. Three siblings, H, Little O and Baby Em are goldfish 'parents' of three goldfish, Barracuda, Patch and Fiss. They all live with Grandpa who tells them stories about the old fountain at the end of their street. One day a sign at the fountain appears "calling all goldfish looking for a summer home." Grandpa marks the calendar and the children count the days. The goldfish enjoy their 'vacation' in the fountain and Grand...
In the summer, everyone can feel cooped up. Children in apartments, and goldfish in bowls. One summer, an old fountain in one neighborhood is cleaned up and transformed into a giant home for goldfish where neighborhood children can bring their goldfish for a "summer home." Siblings H, Little O, and Baby Em can't wait to bring their goldfish, Barracuda, Patch, and Fiss. Neighborhood children meet and play when they drop off their goldfish and throughout the summer as they stop by the fountain to
