It is November 1944 and Alan and Bob are prisoners of war in an old school in Liezen, Austria during the 2nd world war.
They have endured 4 years as prisoners with the intensities of hunger, fear and now desire.
The prisoners experience drama, danger and friendship between them and the people from the town, and they start to get to know two local girls; Hanne and Erika.
Liezen is then liberated by the Americans and British. Alan reflects on what is happening in occupied Austria – the same Nazis are being put back into power to preserve the status quo and in Britain the Daily Mail is likening the Labour Party to the Nazis.
War torn Europe has rules, army officers, British and American intelligence and repatriation centres. Alan is on-the-run, escapes and hides out, and with the strains of loyalty and desire the story then develops to become a journey of discovery with comical uncles and confused priests, as Alan attempts to - 'get her to England'.
