The blood-soaked cover should be a clue this isn't a kids book. What it is, is an irreverent, short, graphic novel parody that pokes fun at takes a sledgehammer of mockery to the tropes of Children's portal fantasy stories. What's it really like to fall down a magical portal into another world? It may not be pretty, but I suspect this might be more realistic: It's hilarious and I love the artwork. Imaginative, colorful and detailed. This blood-soaked, gleefully violent and grumpy story is funny,...
Promising start to a new series!Full of madcap fun, and just subversive enough to appeal.Plus, the art by Skottie YOung is top-notch, (as expected from the guy who did both "Rocket Raccoon" and the recent "Oz" translations for Marvel.
5/5 Rating Originally posted first at MyLifeMyBooksMyEscapeAll kinds of awesomenessI first heard about this series at the end of last year, and since then, it has been my most anticipated new series of the 2015 year! All I had to go off of was the name of the comic and its cover art: a fun, light-hearted cartoon style and coloring, but with a sinister smiling little girl, who has a bloody double-edged axe and bomb in hand, and is with a group of frightened, beat up and bloodied fairytale creatur...
It's kind of like reading Deadpool comics, but instead of a deformed degenerate trapped in a world that fear and hates him; it's a forty year old in a child's body, trapped in a fairy world. The art is amazing and I certainly would want to read the next issue.
This is a super bright, colourful, violent, bloody and funny comic! Love the art work and the story isn't bad - it's just a bit of fun.I love this quote from Neil Gaiman:-"A candy-coloured and vicious delight, and always dangerously funny."I will definitely be reading of more of these!
It all starts out fine and dandy like any fairy tale: all Gertrude has to do is complete a little quest (should take a day) to return back home from Fairyland. Nope. Poor Gertrude ends up stuck in Fairyland for 27 years which makes her a grown ass woman stuck in a little girl’s body and still unable to go home because she hasn’t completed the mission. Let’s just say she’s now lost all patience, is no longer rational, is all kinds of angry, is creative with cursing, and she’s violent! All of whic...
Something about this was just off for me. I think it reminded me too much of the old 90's Nickelodeon cartoons that made me feel super uncomfortable as a kid. Ren and Stimpy etc.
This just wasn't for me. I'm not especially sensitive to violence but here the violence didn't make any sense. The whole storyline just seemed to be about killing without any reason.
Love the idea, love the references, but it's a bit too gruesome for me.
What a cute and funny graphic novel. Gertrude has been stuck in fairyland for 27 years! She got swept here when she was only 8 years old and can’t find the key that will get her out of here. Now she is a drunk, potty mouthed, evil little girl. Can she escape or will she be stuck here forever?
Fluffing Fabulous!!If you are looking for a graphic novel which is hilariously dark, twisted and messed up then look no further! I loved it!!
Gertrude is sugar, spice and everything nice... until you get in her way and she has to cold cock a mother f***er!Hugger Fluffer!
Wow how can something so colorful and bright be so dark and gritty at the same time!?
I Hate Fairyland is about a girl named Gertrude who accidentally found her way into fairyland and has been stuck there for decades.Don't be fooled by the cute style of this title, it is for adults only. Gertrude is a jaded, violent and bloodthirsty woman trapped in a child's body.I Hate Fairyland is a challenging book in that it demands a reaction from the reader. Whether surprise, disgust, amusement or a combination of all of those, you can't just flip emotionlessly through the pages. Not only i...
It's sort of the best and worst thing I've read in a really long time. It takes all the fluffy bunny madness of fairy and puts a bullet through its head. Literally.Disturbed and disturbing, an awesome weird kill-fest with a protagonist you can't quite decide if you love or hate her. Mostly, I feel sorry for Larri. Can't wait to read the rest.
Once upon a time, a little girl called Gertrude wished she could visit the magical Fairyland - and lucky her, her wish came true and she was whisked away to that enchanted place! But she realised she didn’t really want to be there and asked the benevolent Queen Cloudia to go home. The smiling Queen gave her a map and a cheerful companion to help Gertrude get home in no time at all!Twenty. Seven. Years. Later. She didn’t make it home.Physically Gertrude is still the little girl she was when she f...
heh.The other things this reminds me of are themselves clever, memorable, well-done things, which speaks well, and this one is fun...
OK, I'm hooked. This was a nasty little candy coated slice of goodness. And exactly what I needed right now.Once upon a time there was a little girl named Gertrude who made a wish that she would forever regret. Gertrude wanted to be whisked away to an amazing world, but once she gets sucked into Fairyland, she realizes that some dream worlds are not all they are cracked up to be.In order to return home, Gertrude must quest throughout Fairyland to find a key that would open the door that returns
Rated M for mature audience, malice, murder and mayhemHmm... How do I review this one?! This is not your child's comic book, that's for sure. If you look at the cover and grin with an evil glint in your eye, you are in for a treat, my disturbed friend. If, however, the image of the girl holding onto a battle axe dripping with blood and a scene of the wanton destruction of cute creatures with googly eyes has you reaching for your teddy bear, then perhaps this isn't the comic book for you. With a n...
[Image Comics] FIRST ISSUES: The Good (Full review on the WondrousBooks blog.) This one is easy. You read it and you keep asking yourself “What the f*ck? What the fu*k?”It’s hilarious. The story is insane. The characters are insane. The drawings are insane. Gertrude is… well, batshit crazy.Let me back up here: Gertrude is this little girl who wants to go to a land of magic. Except when she does, she really wants to go home. But in order to do that, she needs to finish a quest. Unlike the usual
