X-23 just wants to be normal... Stop forcing X-23 to kill her friends! :'( I can't wait to see what happens in Avengers Undercover. It's the aftermath sequel to this series. We got these remaining kids from Murder World dealing with what they experienced. You got it, PTSD themes! More X-23, Hazmat, and Nico please!
Avengers Arena started out with the promise of bloodshed and violence amongst Marvel’s teen heroes in a Hunger Games-style setting, and that could’ve been an ok series - not great, but ok. Instead it’s been a total letdown as Dennis Hopeless opted instead to try and make readers care about these “characters” by portraying instead tedious teen drama with superpowers. I read the third and final volume only because I wanted to see if he’d at least kill off a bunch of characters and maybe even Arcad...
This series has received a mixed bag of reviews. Me? I thought it was pretty darn fun. I enjoyed the whole superhero hunger games thing going on, and it was rad to see some of my favorite peeps back from Runaways. Bottom line is that I enjoyed this enough that I am heading straight into the continuing series, Avengers Undercover. Stoked to see where they take the characters.
A very satisfying conclusion before Avengers Undercover.
Well... Uhhh...Overall, the promise of the synopsis for the first book has died. That was not very satisfying at all.Dennis Hopeless even wrote in the "Farewell to Avengers Arena" that this was not the story he intended to write and that his creative team spun it like Harry Potter's Triwizard Tournament meets the Hunger Games. But I was willing to get past that because it looked cool and I thought it would be awesome. I was slightly mistaken. This did not live up to expectations. And by this vol...
Well, that was certainly not the ending that I expected for this series, but it still mostly makes sense. But this series as a whole literally suffers from third/last act problems and the moderate potential of this story to go somewhere really exciting died very quickly in this book.So the stakes were largely real despite my hopes this was a Matrix-style event. But you have things that don't make total sense like why Chris Powell (Darkhawk) was kept in a jar instead of being killed outright. You...
wow. just wow. one of the best things i've ever read. and it definitely becomes one of my favorite comics ever.
If you accept the premise, this is good teen superhero fare.
Dennis Hopeless - writerKarl Monline & Kev Walker - illustratorsThe thrilling conclusion to Avengers Arena!Wherein the method with which Arcade deceived the adult superheroes and the world at large is disclosed ... Bloodstone's secret origin is revealed ... Apex and Deathlocket make some startling discoveries in Arcade's underground lair ... and the whole bloody mess comes to a dramatic conclusion!Another great collection from Hopeless & co. Very highly recommended.5/5
It's so important to me that a good story has consequences and this definitely has an impact. A little bit anti-climatic in the ending, and they could have done a better job exploring the consequences but I still love love loved this series.
The end really picked the pace up.
I take full responsibility for reading these out of order. The problem is, I don't care to go back and read the first ones because I know how it ends. I think my main reason why I didn't love this is because I'm not a big fan of the Battle Royale concept. While in theory, it's kind of cool to see Marvel superheroes go at each other, I didn't like the idea of teens maiming and killing each other. I'm not saying I like for adults to do it, but it doesn't feel as wrong to me as teenagers harming ea...
A great conclusion to a great series. The action, drama, and emotion all runs high and the ending was perfect. The part about the adults not being too worries and so easily fooled is a little far-fetches. I thoroughly enjoyed Avengers Arena far more than I thought I would.
Longtime readers may remember that we looked at the first issue of this series some time ago. That ended with one of the lowest scores ever given to a work of fiction on this website. Unfortunately it turned out that first issue was the high point of quality for this series. Everything proceeded to drop like a stone from there. The series follows the story of the villain Arcade as he kidnaps multiple teenage and young characters of the Marvel universe to pit against one another in Murderworld. De...
A satisfying conclusion to this limited series. Not only is it a great mash-up of the Marvel Universe and BATTLE ROYALE, but it introduced me to interesting characters that I've never heard of before. Also, seriously, we need more of the Bloodstone family Marvel, get on that yeah?
3.5/5 Stars
This is probably the worst volume in the series, but it had some fun moments. It all seemed to end far too quickly and conveniently, so I'm pretty underwhelmed overall. Still, this series is a decent, easy read. Nothing special, but it has its moments.
After 28+ days of psychological torture and murderous intent, the surviving kids finally find a way out of murder world. Once the wheels start turning towards the end of the road, the story flies towards its conclusion. With a few of the kids infiltrating Arcade's control center located underground, the variables become too unpredictable for Arcade to handle, and he loses control. Once Apex is defeated (because of course she is the secondary villain), the kids end up making a pact to never speak...
I read the comic books Avengers Arena #13-18 covered in this volume. This is, surprisingly one of the best Marvel NOW books and here it is already coming to an end. Some interesting and sometimes dark pages, but no real resolution, points towards a sequel series - Avengers Undercover, Volume 1: Descent :-) 7 out of 12.
I can't tell you how intense that ending was, and how much I'd be expecting just anything to happen. However, I ended up pretty pleased with how things turned out. (view spoiler)[Both my faves survived!!! Jen and Chase are all right, all the rest is irrelevant. Plus I ended up with a soft spot for all the survivors really, and expectations for angsty development between Anachronism and Bloodstone's relationship. And both Chase and Nico made it, Molly is going to be so pleased!!! And Victor I nee...
