Penny Rolle is such a great character! In the first couple of issues I was a little put off by how aggressive she was, but this issue totally cleared that up for me.
This issue is the most important one, so far, in terms of structural choices and characterization. Also interesting use of colors in flashbacks.
Great chapter about liking yourself exactly the way you are. Penny is awesome!
Penny Rolle, I love you so! Issue 3 presents the first character backstory/guest artist special issue which will happen every third monthly. Penny's story is told in flashbacks while a bunch of talking heads in suits attempt to get her to feel badly about herself. Born Big pastry shop just makes me all kinds of happy, and Penny's customers are horrifically repugnant and not so unfamiliar despite the dystopian setting. We also get a glimpse of other non-compliant ladies from her past as well as a...
Best one so far! ❤️ The end is everything. That mirror. YES.I've skimmed some of the reviews for the first few issues and I think a lot of people who don't "get it" could really use a women's studies class. Look up everything from treatment of women in "asylums" (men dropping off their wives so the men could start new lives, just like in the first issue) to Texas's abortion laws today. I love this series but it makes me sick to my stomach, too. It's supposed to. This character isn't "obsessed wi...
Wow. WOW. I was a bit scared about this Penny Rolle origin story. As a fat female I've been burned many times by fat caricatures and stereotypes in my media consumption (haha). I had braced myself to see it done all wrong, to have another fat person made into a punchline. Then I read... and all of my expectations were exceeded. When I finished I was full of emotion. Is it possible to yell in glee, scream in anger, punch through a wall and laugh at the same time? Whatever it was I did was somethi...
This is the first of the special issues focusing on the back stories of the characters on Bitch Planet. I really like how this not only informed character backstory but also did a lot for the world building as well. Looking forward to the next special issue!
FINALLY got a chance to read this issue and I LOVE it. This issue's back matter essay was particularly awesome. Everyone should be reading this series.
Can I give this more than 5 stars? Can I give it 10?A comic book, about a fat woman, who isn't the butt of a joke, or apologising for her size, or portrayed as pathetic. Penny Rolle ROCKS!
Loved this first "special third" Penny Rolle backstory. Loved Richard Wilson IV's guest art. Loved the "Hey Kids, Patriarchy!" section. LOVED IT
As the first "special third" issue, where a guest artist comes in to illustrate the back story of a certain character and I felt that this was a GREAT start! Penny Rolle is a character that I can connect with on many levels, mostly being that we cannot contain our feelings for outrageous bastards. Already there are so many layers to Penny's story! I WANT TO KNOW MORE. GIVE ME A WHOLE VOLUME OF BACKSTORY PLS. I also think these backstory issues being integrated throughout the series is genius! My
I just want to say, thank you for this issue.I really like the art style. And I'm enjoying the furthering of the character development. For putting it out there that by societal standards brown and black women are non-compliant just from the start. Addressing and touching on the overabundance of minorities in our prison system.
I'm not crying, you're crying!!!
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I ain't broke...and you bastards ain't never gonna break me." Penny Rolle is my new hero :)
Hell yes to Penny! Getting her back story was magnificent! I love this series because it's filled with strong female leads. The ensemble is spectacular, but Penny may be one of my favorites. Getting a glimpse at how she came to be on Bitch Planet was so enlightening. And that last bit - wowzers!
Penny Rolle's vibrant back story and Megan Carpenter's fantastic essay resonated deeply with me. Short and savage, these women continue to impact me deeply and refuse to let go.
Yes!! My favorite issue so far. Keep it up, ladies.
Deserves ten stars for Ideal Penny.
obviously by the five stars rating this is the best issue so fareven the essay in the end was amazing i loved it and the best essay so far as well its personal its intimate and we made a connection therehow old is penny rolle now that is what i really want to know i was surprised by the 22 or 28 years old when they imprisoned her because she looked older not because she was big the girl from Precious 2009 the movie was big but she was cute it was apparent that she was young anyway way this was p...
I think Penny Rolle might be my favorite character ever. In anything.
