This is one of those gorgeous "everybody" books, but those who love to draw will especially cherish it. Christopher Myers is mind-bogglingly artistic, and seeing what his pen can do made me wish I had a pen like his. I like that the last pages show more simplistic art, and make it not so much about the "talent" of the artist, but about the worlds inside each pen that are longing to be let out. Wonderful!
Christopher Myers does a great job at sharing his poetic lyrical dialogue and pencil sketches. Good inspiration for artists!
Very different than Myers’ other works, but it was good. I liked the story that went along with it
I love love love this book. It is beautifully written and illustrated. It made me think of how we all feel "small" sometimes. This book will encourage children to use their imagination and also inspire to believe in themselves and their greatness.
This book. Wow. I left this at the bookstore but haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I always say there is power in the pencil (or pen, or marker, etc) - this book celebrates the creativity on the page. But on the page is so much more. I know this book will soon become part of my collection. I want to share it with each group of children I teach for forever . . .
In a series of doodly, Magritte-y, creativity-inspiring black-and-white ink drawings, a boy shows the many ways his pen helps him capture, make sense of, and imagine the world. The sketches are accomplished and complex but also playfully loose in a way that seems inviting and empowering to the budding artist. Sketches on the next-to-last illustrated page are intentionally childlike in a clear invitation to young readers. Considerations:- The hand-lettered font is not the easiest in the world to
Great little paean to art and imagination and how they free and empower us.I'm looking forward to seeing Myers color work. (This is black and white.)Check any of several youtube readings of this book if you're uncertain about wanting it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMmXt...
Hard to pick a favorite image among these lovely drawings--"My pen has x-ray vision," probably. I love the precision of his line work here and all the variety he shows using negative space and surprising images. Makes me want to draw.
My son brought this book home from school today, and I have fallen in love. He loves it, but he asked me why I love it. I love it for the incredible illustrations. I love the words and worlds it holds. I love it for the insights and inspirations. I love the message it shares. And I love that after we read it, my son went to find a pen and asked what worlds he might find inside it.
”MY PEN TAP-DANCES ON THE SKY AND DRAWS CLOUDS WITH ITS FEET.” My Pen by Christopher Myers exhibits a world of imagination. The black and white pages hold the beauty, magic, and power of art and creativity. With a pen in hand, anything can happen. You can do anything or go anywhere. Just draw, draw, draw! Draw an elephant in a teacup. Tell the world how you feel about the world. Or show your heart to your family and friends. Love, insecurity, faith, fear, and so much more can spring to life in t...
My Pen by Christopher Myers – Beautiful celebration of the simple skill of picking up a pen and drawing. Incredible imaginative pieces throughout.
I can not overstate my love of this book. It is nothing short of an ode to imagination that is wildly, delightfully accessible to children. This book makes your fingers itch to pick up a pen and create new worlds of your own - just like Christopher Myers challenges you to do. Classroom ConnectionWriting: I plan to use this book to kick off our unit of study about illustration. Character Lesson: This book would also be a great starter to a discussion about seeing the world a little differently an...
My Pen is a children's picture book written and illustrated by Christopher Myers, which stars a graceful boy with a fedora and soft curls that talks about the power of making art and the power of the pen.The text is rather simplistic and straightforward. It stars a little boy with an artistic soul as he explores the power of art and his pen. The black and white illustrations are wonderfully done and depict the narrative rather well and seem to be drawn from a pen.The premise of the book is rathe...
This was featured at the Disney preview at midwinter today. There were lots of "ohs" uttered as each page of this powerful paean to imagination was read aloud. I revisited it as soon as I returned to my hotel room and love it more with each reading. It is gorgeous. It is powerful. It's a book I'll be giving to my art teacher and other teachers with the hope that they never forget to nurture this hope. The pen and ink illustrations at once simple and metaphorical invite lengthy contemplation. I c...
A new picture book from an award-winning illustrator which shows the power of art in a child's life. Using powerful sketches, the book talks about the freedom and self-esteem that comes from creating art. Myers also speaks to the importance of imagination and creativity, showing an elephant in a teacup and the protagonist riding a dinosaur. He plays with different perspectives and plays the simplicity of ink and pen art against the complexity of world problems that art also speaks to. Even mista...
The illustrations are indeed gorgeous. I'm not impressed with the story-there is no story actually, this is more along the lines of an illustrated poem. I feel that Myers is gunning for a Caldecott Medal next year with this one; it feels slightly pretentious. It insists on itself. I do love how the main character seems to me racially ambiguous. He also doesn't have a name; these things help make the book that much more accessible for children.
Wow.Christopher Myers really brought his A-game with the pen and ink illustrations in this picturebook. Just incredible illustrations on every page and an invitation to explore your world with art.Certainly there are other books that refer to the use of writing utensils and imagination like the ever-famous Harold and the Purple Crayon but this is by far the best I have read.
“Sometimes I feel small,” Christopher Myers laments, “when I see… rich and famous people.” “But then I remember I have my pen.”His pen, powered by imagination, has the power to create worlds and transform reality. It “tap-dances on the sky/ and draws clouds with its feet.”This is a gorgeous picture book full of hope, imagination, and most importantly, inspiration. It’s a reminder that art is cathartic, empowering, and it is a process. All artists, even accomplished ones, “[don’t] always get it r...
What I like best about this one is the emphasis on the power of one's pen (and imagination). That even if you're not powerful in any other way, using your pen is a form of power all the same.
As an educator, one of the greatest challenges I face is making my students believe in themselves and their abilities. This book is an awesome way of showing students they can do and be anything they want, they simply have to make the choice to do it! The book begins with "There are rich people who own jewels and houses and pieces of the sky. Sometimes I feel small when I see those rich and famous people." This is a feeling we can all relate too. With children, though, these feeling are difficul...
