I really enjoyed the collection of photographs featured in this book as well the photographers' descriptions of their methods, backgrounds, and passion for what they do. The Instagram Book inspired me to create an Instagram account featuring my photography in order to share and grow in my work.
The gorgeous photographs pulled me in, but the snippets of personal stories kept me there in the pages. Each instagram artist featured here introduces themselves and their work, explaining their motivations, their unique ways of seeing the world, and in several cases, their day-job that has nothing to do with the world of photography housed in their smartphone. I use Instagram as my own form of memory keeping (it is what has replaced scrapbooking for me as my kids have grown older). This book profiles a number of Instagram photographers, most of whom are professional photographers and use Instagram as an "online gallery" basically. Which is fine, but that's such a niche use of the tool and only covers a small group of users. A book filled with good pictures that you can find from Instagram. Each picture has a small profile of the photographer, the reasons why he/she is doing it. I guess the guy at the center, a early Instagram community manager could have given the idea or was invited to the book for promotional purposes, beyond being suspicious about the motives of this book...didn't found much of creative innovation but good eye candy pictures. In - the title says it all - "The Instagram Book", we are presented with a selection of photographs from the popular social media site. The images - in the square format currently dictated by Instagram - seem mostly shot with iPhones and are mostly first rate. I cannot, unfortunately, say "first rate" for the photographer-supplied text that accompanies the images. Perhaps it is just me, but I found the text very often ponderous, pompous, precious in its description of the photographer's artistry...
