The photos are amazing and in some instances even surreal. This is a collection of pix the public hasn't seen dozens of times already. The journal gives a lot of insight into the relationship shared by Andre De Dienes and Marilyn Monroe, but also offers insights into the era. It is a beautiful pictorial autobiography told through a journal in one of the artist's own words. It is ideal for photographers and Marilyn fans alike.

The photos are amazing, but André de Dienes was creepy AF.
This is aphoto-book with a story. Andre was a close friend of Marilyn in her early days. The shots are beautiful and mostly un-glammy, this is why I had to get this book. Flashy pictures of Norma-Jeane you can get all over the place.

A friend gave this book to me a few days ago, after my essay about Marilyn Monroe, written to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of her death, was posted on Salon.com (http://www.salon.com/2012/08/06/golde...). Andre de Dienes was the first serious photographer to work with Marilyn, then nineteen-year-old Norma Jeane Daugherty, a fledgling model with a single magazine cover, a bit of a fluke, under her belt. Norma Jeane entranced de Dienes immediately; he shot his first photos of her the nex...
This book has amazing photos in it! Just the right amount of text! And even though it was secondhand stories about Marilyn Monroe, I feel like I got insight into the person she truly was. I enjoyed the stories and am glad Andre De Dienes' draft was included as well. I appreciated what he said and the stories he told, but there were times when you could really tell that it was a straight man from 50+ years ago narrating. I mean that in a way to point out his hypocrisy at some points. He didn't li...
One of the best I’ve read. This photographer seems to have captured the truest moments of Marilyn, while equally sharing beyond what we “see”. His accounts of their relationship is candid yet classy, and the giant photographs are simply wonderful. It’s nice to read something from someone that actually knew her, instead of the endless recounting of her life story from someone that absolutely wasn’t even an acquaintance.
Most people have seen Andre De Dienes' wonderful pictures of Norma Jeane looking happy and youthful on the beach, with wind in her hair and a big smile on her face. De Dienes is one of the most noteworthy photographers who took pictures of her in my personal opinion, and I love this slipcase of two books. The first book is an edited version of some of Mr. De Dienes' personal memoirs along with many of his best photos of her, and the second one contains his full machine typed and hand written memo...
The photos are lovely. The story of Andre’s romance is problematic. He idolises the compliant, cheerful girl he first meets. How much was Norma Jeane/MM going along to get ahead? How much did he pressure her into bed? He clearly loved her but his recollection isn’t necessarily ‘her’ so much as her reacting to him. So interesting that their first argument revolves around her reacting to another photog in a similar way to how she had reacted (positively) to him. She was canny and knew how to give
