Interesting novellas. I haven't read any of the main novels yet but I wanted to read this to get a feel for her writing before I purchased one of the novels. This and two other novels set in the Hidden Sea Tales are available for free on Tor.com. Or you can purchase them all on Amazon for ninety-nine cents each. Seems like an interesting world. I'll purchase the first novel in the near future once I get through a few more of my already purchased ones.
A well written and enjoyable short story.
I'm not as fond of this story as the others I have read by AM Dellamonica, though I tend to favour urban fantasy over pre-industrial. I had a bit of a hard time following what was happening in this politically inclined short, but I am curious enough to read the others in the series. Gale is quite an interesting character, and it's nice to see an older woman/younger man combo.
Extremely interesting setup and characters, complex political interactions, but didn't feel complete. Clearly a prequel rather than a self-contained arc.
Lovely. I like the politics and the universe - might need to deep-dive on this one.
3.5 stars
I really enjoyed this short story! I recently read Child of a Hidden Sea for review and really wanted a prequel story. I was then informed that this was on tor.com so I read it! It was awesome reading about the first time Gale and Parrish met!
This is a cute little novelette, introducing us to the characters and establishing the rules of this particular world. I thought it did a pretty good job of getting everything established. It's an interesting world with interesting magic rules and geography, and it left me wanting to read more.
Super confuseddddd on what happend
This short story I think is supposed to be a teaser for a novel she has in the works. I don't think this functions particularly well as a short story, but the world is interesting and I am interested in seeing what happens if these characters show up again.

Felt like it was part of a longer story. If the author ever wrote up a book about the same characters, I'd have to get it.
Lovely short prequel story.I've read Child of a Hidden sea, and i fell in love with the world and characters,December can't come soon enough, but in the meantime i can re-read this story and the book. Also oh gosh!!! How I have missed Parrish!!!.
Fun read
The introduction of Garland Parrish to Gale. Need I say more? :-)
This novella leaves me feeling unsatisfied. I felt parts were somewhat confusing as to the world, though I got the overal idea. And I find it interesting. But this world clearly needs more than 29 pages to be properly set-up. The characters in this however drew me in. The main character, a forty year old woman, was quite a character. And I liked it. But I loved her companion, Parish. I could definetely read more with these characters.
Fantasy. Has some interesting pieces but feels more like the first chapter of a novel than a short story. I'd read a novel with these characters though, the female protagonist especially. She's over forty, you guys, and I bet you anything she's not wearing leather pants. It's a nice change.Online at Tor.com.
Aha! Now I like Parrish, I like him a whole lot and I like him with Sophie and I understand his grief over Gale and the whole thing is making sense! Definitely read this before starting the Hidden Sea Tales Series.
