The Civil War has ended and seven-year-old Laura Matthews is lost and homeless, but is rescued by Chief Shooting Star and taken to Still Waters. His tribe also takes in Cody Miller, another young orphan, and it is there at the Still Waters camp that Laura finds the love and security of a new family. She also develops a crush on Cody, but fate separates the two young friends. Then, inadvertently, they run into each other again when Cody unwittingly travels out east where Laura has made a new life.
