This book might need a warning label for married leaders and “KEEP YOUR SPOUSE FROM READING THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU DO!” The reason? She or he may recognize the “I” problems in your marriage and ministry. Don Wilkerson shares his own “me” and “my” calling in ministry with The Girl in the Red Dress . He saw Cindy too many times as less than his better half. There are vital lessons in this brutally honest book for all married couples in ministry to learn from, at least those who desire to become a healthy couple.
The history and growth of Teen Challenge is shared from their perspective. Those who know this history and are in some way a part of the ministry can learn from Don and Cindy’s experiences. Those less familiar with the ministry will be challenged by how God can use an ordinary couple in extraordinary ways.
For the unmarried who are hoping to enter the ministry married, Don shares how not to do as he did at times with his wife Cindy. On the other hand, he demonstrates how to be the graceful, better half. “Two are better than one,” when they are with-nesses to how God intends they share life’s calling together.
‘’The Girl in the Red Dress’’ is a wonderful tribute to Ms. Cindy, and also shows how important it is to have a partner, not only in ministry, but also in life. I’ve always said that I'm all accelerator and my wife is the brakes, and it seems this is the case for Pastor Don, as well. This book is also a wonderful trip down the Teen Challenge Memory Lane. I smiled through most of it, wept through some of it, and even cheered in my spirit a few times. One of my favorite quotes from Pastor Don is found in Chapter 12: ‘’The goal of marriage is not to think alike, but to think together.”
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in full-time ministry and married, and to those interested in the amazing history of Teen Challenge.
