She bravely shone the flashlight ahead of her, but with each step her heart pounded louder! Suddenly, she heard the voice again. This time it was much louder and more urgent. Mallory knew the cry was coming from the far corner of the attic, right above her parents closet and the laundry room. She made her way in front of a large object covered by a dusty canvas. She slowly and timidly pulled the canvas off the object. The heavy canvas fell to the floor with a soft thud, kicking up dust as it landed. Mallory could now make out what was behind the canvas. It was a huge mirror. It had ornate carved wood all around its edges. But Mallory was not looking at the wood; she was staring at the mirror. Instead of seeing her reflection, she was shocked to be looking at a small, black child staring back at her! Mallory immediately knew that her brain could not process the image. She felt a strange weakness come over her. She let out an audible gasp as the pitch black night began to close in around her. As she started to lose consciousness, images of the past few months flashed in her mind. She could feel her body slowly slump to the floor and then...total darkness!
