A mixed bag of stories some excellent some use middling. The spiritual successor to the EC Comics line wasn't getting the big names of its initial run but there are some gems from some golden age greats like Syd Shores, Reed Crandall, and Jerry Grandenetti; and newer stars like Tom Sutton, Ernie Colón, Pat Boyette, Rich Buckler, and Richard Corben.
The stories, as always, are a mixed bag -- some good and some predictable. But on the whole, it is an enjoyable volume with some very good art.
I remember hearing that Creepy magazine hit a low point, but I wasn't sure when that happened. Sadly, now I know. This was the weakest volume by far. The art was still good, as they used the same artists and the artwork was always of great quality. But the stories really got weak. When your stories are based on a twist ending, you really need a twist ending. These stories, at least for the most part, had flat endings. There was a story on cannibalism and I think there was one in the previous archive too? It's just not my cup of tea so I can't give it as high a rating as the archives that came before it.
A marked improvement over the previous few volumes. Archie Goodwin is back in the fold on this and it's incredible how the quality has bumped up with his return. Some of the stories are a little repetitive- they're bound to be in anthologies like this- but over all it was a good read and not a slog. Good stuff!
Dark Horse have done a nice job with these old comics.Brings back the days when I was little and spending too many hours reading these.It is great to have them back.
Well I'm glad this happened. The stories are back on an upswing. No single artist really dominates any of the issues, but the writing is actually solid, and there are a lot less crap filler stories than in the previous two volumes. Also, I think the last story in the collection is the first full Richard Corben story, which is a good indication of even better stories to come.
I was lucky and collected a full set of these magazines and got a chance to read the fantastic stories and enjoy the incredible art from many of the greats, many of who got their start here, from the comic world. If you like offbeat horror, supernatural, SiFi and just plan different stories then these are the magazines for you. Very recommended
