You Shall Be My Witnesses

You Shall Be My Witnesses

Fred Field Goodsell
0/5 ( ratings)
For a thousand years after the ends of the territories contiguous to the old Roman roads had been reached, unknown seas and the iron curtain of Islam estopped the urge of evangelism, except for brief and sporadic incidents, until the Age of Exploration culminated in the eighteenth century in charted seaways for regular two-way traffic, and made possible a secure service of supply for far outposts of Western religion and commerce alike. Promptly there followed an explosion of these rival drives in the Western soul. Their subsequent interplay, often in conflict, sometimes in unhappy alliance, forms one of the most fascinating and revolutionary episodes in the annals of mankind. In all these events, redrawing the contours of the world and producing, among other consequences hardly anticipated at the outset, dynamic new units of the World Church, the American Board has perforce had a part. And, because it sits loosely to any control by the domestic councils of the Church body with which it is chiefly connected, so that it is free to take directly such measures as may be recommended by its own experience and insights, it is at least possible that this Board has been somewhat more resilient to novel conditions in its fields, less bound by stereotypes where fresh procedures are called for, than some of its sister bodies. That opinion is often strongly expressed by national Christians in other Churches in what are still called mission lands. We of the American Board should like to think that it is so.
