The way Whitman strings words together is a type of writing I can only aspire to, a man wise beyond his time, who peered into the hearts of men and knew their secrets. He talks about humans the way all humans must be spoken to, to unlock a third eye. Just as much a philosopher and spiritual man as he is a poet.
Nice lines, lots of racism
My only complaint is that there weren't more poems in this book.
After reading this book it will be clear why Walt Whitman is considered an American classic. It is difficult to live up to the man who wrote, "Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)"
I can appreciate the poetry, but I found it repetitious and monotonous.
This took me around six months to read, but it was worth it. No one told me how queer and horny and just altogether EXTRA Whitman was, which totally would've made me get to him sooner.How extra was Whitman? I wanted to love Whitman more, but I think the selection was a good one.

His poems are very hard to read, but occasionally there were things that were said that stuck out dramatically. I loved how he talked about war time.
While some writers are skilled at capturing a moment, others write across the ages and feel as relevant today as ever. That was my experience reading Walt Whitman. A feminist existentialist poet with no filters who wrote from the deepest of himself to show reflections on faith, morality, spirituality, sexuality, war, life, cities, love, joy, and a whole slew of topics in a way that I had to keep checking his bio. Maybe I just don’t get it, but I found few good poems scattered among lists. What was good was wonderful and well worth digging through the rest. Perhaps whoever compiled it needed more of a vision? I might revisit this in a few years and see if I can get more from it.
