"Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa: The Foreign Film In America"

"Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa: The Foreign Film In America"

James N. Selvidge
4.6/5 ( ratings)
A combination of history and reference. The 1950's and the 1960's have long been considered the "Golden Age of Foreign Films". But for those born since 1950, little is known. This was the time of Joe McCarthy, the John Birch Society , the House UnAmerican Activities Committee and resultant "blacklist", and rampant Coast-t0-Coast Censor Boards. Hollywood proclaimed - "we won't import them; we won't distribute them; we won't allow the theaters we control to exhibit them. The first third of this book is a detailed history of this era, and the band of rebels who prevailed. Initially, only residents of New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. exhibited foreign language films with sub-titles. By the late 1960's, the "war" had expanded to 600 "art theatres" in literally all metropolitan cities. The balance of the book reprises the 330 greatest films of this period, each ending with a color picture of the poster that appeared on the theatre front of the native country's film premiere. Today, 200 of these films are available on DVD from Netflix. This is the ONLY reference book that will allow selection and prioritization of the films the reader will want to see.
