This Breathing World

This Breathing World

José Luis de Juan
3.5/5 ( ratings)
Constructed as reflections of one another, this pair of playfully unsettling, wonderfully sensual thrillers explores the secrets of desire and the dark yearning to make history--and the drastic lengths some will go to in order to do so. Set in first-century Rome, the first tale tells of Mazuf, a homosexual scribe who is driven to kill. The second story, set in modern-day Boston, focuses on the sexual exploits of a Harvard student, eventually revealing that he, too, is a murderer. Carefully intertwining the two narratives of the young murderers, this novel ultimately begs the question "Can actions change not just the future but, more compellingly, the past?"
