Children's Illustrated Books (Britain in Pictures)

Children's Illustrated Books (Britain in Pictures)

Janet Adam Smith
3/5 ( ratings)
Before 1800, children generally found that the pictures in their books did no more than drive home the moral lessons of the text. But during the nineteenth century, as this book describes, children's books and the illustrations in them became more and more attractive, and every Victorian nursery that boasted a copy of Alice with pictures by Tenniel could claim to possess a work of art.

Janet Adam Smith recalls the early picture books, by Kate Greenaway and others, and the work of famous author-illustrators like Beatrix Potter and Edward Lear. These were the great artists. In recent years the general standard of children's illustrated books has greatly improved, so much so that, as the author says, "There are almost too many books to talk about."

Janet Adam Smith was for some years the literary editor of The Listener, and is the author of several books, including Life Among the Scots, published in this series.
