The search for another intelligent life form was over --

Yet when humans first met the aliens known as the Phuili, they were faced with a people who refused to admit there could be more than one sentient race in the universe. To the Phuili, humans were clever yet inferior "animals", no matter what the contradictory evidence they were shown.

Then the Phuili and humans discovered the technological relics of a long-vanished race, relics which could open the rest of the universe to both races.
