When a young girl sets out to wreak a little vengeance on the homewrecker that her father is sleeping with, well, quite frankly, she underestimates what she is getting into. Nicely paced novella, with some comedic bits here and there, and vicious, vicious climax. My thoughts:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvXDK...
review to come for Horror DNA but suffice to say, just as everything else I have read by James, it was fantastic. Coming of age with teen bad-ass GIRLS.We need more of this.Loved it.
This sure is a fun one!!!Im not so old that I don't remember the teen days of toilet paper and spray paint against people we didn't like.In this case, it's a cheating dad's new lover. What's the harm in throwing toilet paper in trees and sugar in a gas tank? Well, other than morals, but teens will be teens. These teens bit off more than they could chew
What starts out as a prank to teach a woman a lesson about getting involved with a married man goes terribly, horribly wrong. Amelia and her friends set out for Callaghan Drive for a little harmless fun and vandalizing to scare the woman away from her dad. Only the woman her dad has taken an interest in isn’t who she seems and a multitude of horrors await the girls inside her house. The entire time I was reading this, I kept thinking to myself what an awesome movie this would make. The plot is e...
When three teenage besties set out to teach someone a lesson about messing with a married man, the important thing to remember is that nobody was supposed to get hurt. Their intention was only to make the other woman go away. Sure there may have been some property damage, but mild destruction was not meant to include death. Well you know what they say about best-laid plans. Things go awry for Amelia and her friends when they discover a horrifying secret and there's no telling who will survive th...
In James Newman's RIDE OR DIE, we have a teenaged girl who finds out her father is cheating on her mother. With the help of her two best friends, she is determined to send a "message" to the home wrecker. Then, everything changes in the most unexpected, and unpleasant way....I finished this book in a single sitting, and that's about the highest compliment I can give. Pick this one up and see for yourselves!Recommended.
Amelia Fletcher’s life is turned upside down when she discovers her father’s affair. Taking it upon herself, Amelia seeks to warn the woman away, so that things can get back to normal and repairs can be made. But the house on Callaghan Drive, where the homewrecker supposedly lives, reveals that there’s more to the story.(WARNING: This review contains minor spoilers.)I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I thank James Newman for giving me the opportunity.Sitting at around a hundr...
Ride or Die is the first solo work that I have read from James Newman and I am very happy to report that it is just as brilliant as his collaborations. You can read Janine's full review at Horror DNA by clicking here.
Some good old fashioned down and dirty non supernatural horror fun. Well, my idea of fun may differ from yours, but this was just what I was in the mood for. Newman delivers like always.
I read Ride or Die by James Newman in one sitting because how could I not? This story starts strong and stays strong.Newman’s characters and writing are flawless. The dark humor of the character interactions sucks you right in, and the steady progression, suspense, and build hold you there. The dialogue is clever and realistic. It and the story flow at an incredible pace. The progression into dark suspense and then to horror is seamless and downright impressive. But a word of warning: that horror...
Writing my full review for SCREAM MAG! Thank you Silver Shamrock Pub for the review copy
James Newman knows how to keep me turning pages. Maybe too well.Amelia is a good kid who finds out her father is having an affair and decides just for one night, she wants to leave that mantle behind. Gathering up her friends, she travels to the homewrecker’s place for some vandalism. That’s about 25% of the story, and I don’t want to give you anymore. Suffice it to say, you’ll enjoy this read more not knowing. Newman drags us to some seriously unexpected places, and does so at a breakneck speed...
Oh the adventures of Amelia, Cassie, and Folline. Three lovely, loyal young girlfriends who stumbled into the unfortunate situation of a deadly mistress. So in a nutshell, this was a very straightforward tale of terror. I think keeping it simple was a smart move, especially in the roughly 100 page story. The violence was adequate and, even though some of the dialogue and suspense dragged in spots, the flow was good. The ending was a bit plain for such a quirky story, but it was fine for what it
About half way, this story goes from revenge vandalism to devilish face-off at the drop of a hat. Things get dangerous and creepy with little warning, and when the action starts up, it doesn't really let up until the end. My score mostly reflects my interest in this type of horror. Though I love stories about serial killers, there still needs to be substance. I felt like this take was pretty one dimensional. I need more twists and turns to be truly happy. That being said, I still enjoyed this ri...
Thank you to Silver Shamrock Publishing for providing me with a copy of Ride or Die in exchange for an honest review!3.5 rounded up!To begin with, I was really excited when I received a copy of Ride or Die because I read The Wicked by James Newman and really loved it. Content Warnings: Racial Slur, Homophobic Slur For the most part, Ride or Die checks off some things that I really love in horror. We have a revenge element, we have blood & gore & an author that really does go to unexpected pl...
Dad is having an affair. His daughter feels sorry for her mother and plans revenge on the mistress. But her home isn't empty. Some bad surprises are waiting on Amelia and her two girlfriends... the story starts slowly and you would never have suspected it to turn into such a nail biting tale of violence, gore and terror with many great details (e.g. the photo book they find). Intriguing, well written and interesting to the very end. Really recommended!
Super fun ride with lots of twists and turns.
James is one of the best indie horror writers in the business and when he offered me a early review copy I was beyond thrilled!!🤓RIDE OR DIE combines coming of age and revenge, two of my favorite tropes. I loved that the main characters were females and the friendship between them seemed very real to me. There are text messages exchanged by the girls peppered throughout the novella that I thought was a very nice touch. As far as the plot goes I don’t want to give too much away but what starts out...
Sometimes you finish a book and you just have to say *DANG*. This is one of those books. Fifteen year old Amelia has just found out that her father is cheating on her mother. She convinces her friends, Cassie and Folline, to help her show her father's new interest just what she thinks of her. Off the girls go, armed with spray paint, toilet paper, and a whole lot of anger for a night of retributive vandalism.Except the teenage girls are about to get far more than they bargained for. This story i...
This was a fun book to read. Mr. Newman has a style of writing that makes you feel like you are part of the book. There are a couple of questions that are unanswered. With that I give it a 4.5/5.
