This is the most ambitious thing I've ever written. In a lot of ways, the Poppy War trilogy was my training wheels; I finished off the standard linear epic fantasy project, and now I get to do all the formal, stylistic, thematic experimentation that I want. It's a love letter and breakup letter to Oxford. It gnaws at questions that have bothered me since I started graduate school–chiefly the brokenness of academia, and the sacrifices that true change might require. It's all the gnarly, bizarre,
I have put off writing this review for months, for no reason other than I was afraid of failing to fully and accurately explain R.F. Kuang’s newest work to people interested in reading it. So I hope you’ll forgive me for letting myself off the hook in a way—I’m not going to be covering the entirety of Babel in this single Goodreads review. As more people read their advance copies, I’m sure there’ll be a surplus of opinions to take into consideration before beginning this book, but I’m not going

Actual Rating: 4.5 stars.Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution is R. F. Kuang’s standalone adult fantasy novel that centers on the story of Babel—a prestigious institute of translation in University of Oxford and its four students, as they uncover the sinister truths that surround the institution they’ve entered. Babel is an ambitious exploration of several ideas that tightly interweave colonialism, language, academia and paths to decoloniza...

1) This book is going to single-handedly save the dark academia genre. I just know it.2) I love how you can tell the author is an academic because the title sounds like something straight out of JSTOR lol

"She learned revolution is, in fact, always unimaginable. It shatters the world you know. The future is unwritten, brimming with potential. The colonizers have no idea what's coming, and that makes them panic. It terrifies them.Good. It should.""'That's just what translation is, I think. That's all speaking is. Listening to the other and trying to see past your own biases to glimpse what they're trying to say. Showing yourself to the world, and hoping someone else understands.'"Absolutely phenom...
4.5/5the rumors are true: it's absolutely phenomenal. babel is by far the most ambitious historical fantasy book on colonialism and resistance that i've ever read, and it surpassed all my expectations. i loved how the themes of colonial oppression, revolutions, worker revolts, violent resistance, and the power of language were tackled - and the way rf kuang managed to weave in an original magic system throughout all these themes is honestly brilliant. the prose is packed to the brim with comment...
Babel is a fantasy world of the early 1800s rooted in thematics of race, historical imperialism, literature, and language creating the well-known and favored 'Dark Academia' storyline. It is done so well with the magical aspects of silver not straying too out of bounds, that it entirely feels like this could be an alternate history of the world we currently inhabit. Without giving too much away as I do not want to attempt explaining this story to you (that should keep to the hands of R.F. Kuang
DARK ACADEMIA BY THE QUEEN RF KUANG???? I AM COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS 😭🙏🏽BABEL is a dark academia set in 1830s Oxford that interrogates language, translation, and colonialism. “Egypt would suffer her ten plagues.” I had no idea what to expect going into Babel. On the one hand, I had a lot of nostalgia for TPW and the Babel hype was very real. On the other, I was disappointed by the final instalment of the trilogy and had become more critical of it and RFK’s writing as time went on. So when it came to Babel, I was pretty much a blank slate. Ready for whatever Rebecca threw at me. But basically from the first chapter, I knew that Babel was going to be everything it p
