John Marshall was a classical scholar, Oxford educated, who taught philosophy and literature in addition to being the Rector at the Royal High School of Edinburgh. He translated works by Horace and Xenophon. Here, he provided a timelessly invaluable guide for beginners to the wisdom of the Ancient Greek philosophers, from Seven Sages like Thales of Miletus, other Ionian thinkers like Axaximander, Heraclitus, the Pythagoreans, the Eleatics, the Atomists, the Sophists, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Skeptics and Epicureans, and finally, the Stoics. This volume and edition contains a relatively brief and illustrated overview of the Pre-Socratic philosophers, from Thales of Miletus to Zeno of Elea and Democritus, the so-called Laughing Philosopher.
