Do You Like Butter?: The Meaning Behind the Title

Legend says that if you pick a buttercup up and place it beneath your chin, the color yellow will appear if you like butter. Growing up in the suburbs of Massachusetts, the author and her siblings would take part in the ritual of asking each other "do you like butter?" every time they happened upon a buttercup. Scientifically speaking, everybody's chin should turn yellow due to the way the flower is designed. Most people know this, but it's still fun to try to unearth magic in the ordinary.

In that same way, Melvin uses the poems in Do You Like Butter? to immortalize ordinary life moments by turning them into art.
