It was a momentous day for Dick Weatherby when he left his humiliating position as clerk in his uncle's New York firm to ship aboard a whaler which would leave him in South America.

1812 was a dangerous year for a ship a sea -- even a peaceful whaling vessel -- and what a welcome awaited the crew off the coast of Chile! Captured by Peruvian royalists, Dick managed to escape and seek the aid of Joel Poinsett, the United States Consul General.

From then on, one stirring event follows another, with Dick's recapture by the royalists and Poinsett and the patriot army attempting to force the surrender of the town where the American sailors were imprisoned.
