4.5, rounded up for Goodreads:The Half That You See, Edited By Rebecca RowlandThis is an Anthology of 26 different stories, all with a theme based on a quote from an Edgar Allen Poe story, The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether from 1845. A story where a person visits a mental institution in southern France that was known for a new method of treating mental illnesses called the “System of Soothing.” At least so he thought, until the big reveal, and nothing is as it seems. So that brings
Featuring twenty-six horror authors, the quality of this short stories anthology is really high level. It features some authors that I was a fan of already and some others whom I will keep an eye on from now on.I find that, most of the times, short stories anthologies are hit and miss. It obviously depends on one's taste, but they generally feature some stories that are very good and some that are less than impressive, and hopefully the former outweighs the latter. Thus I was very pleased to disco...
Top-notch stuff from an amazing selection of writers.
I just finished reading this collection and I'm still not quite certain how to feel about some of the stories. Unsettling is one word that comes to mind. They get in your head and leave you unsure about what is happening in front of your eyes. So....pretty damn successful as a psychological horror collection. I love the way some of the authors use form, POV, and story to unsettle the reader. Because many times it isn't what you're reading that disturbs you, but HOW you're reading it....WHO is sa...
Well crafted stories of grief and loss, love and heartbreak, marital discord, freak accidents, murderers and more. All of the stories veer off what appears to be their expected path to morph into something dark and unusual. If The Twilight Zone and Tales of the Unexpected had a baby then The Half That You See would be their offspring. There are so many wondrous tales inside but I will just touch on a few of my favorites. Winnebago Indian Motorhome By Tonka written by Eddie Generous In which a ma...
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher*I truly enjoyed this anthology. The theme of nightmares and delusions is just my thing, and all of the authors offered original and interesting takes on it. I found the book hard to put down, and there were plenty of plot twists that surprised and delighted me. I thought all the stories were great, but these were my favorites:"The Tapping at Cranburgh Grange" by Felice Picano - A chilling, classic haunted house story. I loved it. "...
Readers beware! Keep your eyes peeled and your mind sharp. Only then will you have all you need to navigate this cunning anthology. And with a title like The Half That You See, Elin Olausson’s ‘Chalk’ is just the right opener to set the tone for what lies ahead.Later installments, such as Lamont Turner’s ‘The Intruder’ certainly appealed to my love for anything with a creepy home invasion theme. While the plot seems oddly reminiscent to 1993’s When A Stranger Calls Back at first, it soon fleshes...
These stories will stick with you after you close the pages. Haunting you in a way. They’re unique, emotional, and vivid. I’m a huge horror fan, and some of these definitely sent chills down my spine. There were plenty of twists that made the ending of each story hard to predict. Honestly even though the stories aren’t connected I found it hard to put the book down and walk away because I was so curious about what the next author had to offer. If you’re looking for gory horror, this isn’t the bo...
I received an ARC copy from the publisher at one of the author’s requests! Thank you so much, Robert Ottone for thinking of me! And thank you Rebecca Rowland for the opportunity to read and review this anthology! This was such an interesting read. I’ve read several short story collections, but they’re usually all by the same author. I’ve only read one with multiple authors, which that only had 3 stories by 3 authors. This one, however, has 26 different authors! Woah! They all follow similar themes...
